Dr Faiz Still Hopeful To Go Into Space

KANGAR, Nov 15 (Bernama) -- Mejar Dr Faiz Khalid still has high hopes to be the country's second astronaut even as there are those who want the programme to be reviewed.

He said he was ready to go to the International Space Station (ISS) and has not stopped training in order to be ready for space.

"The programme should be continued to put Malaysia up there with other developed countries in space exploration," he told Bernama today.

Faiz was met here after attending the Science and Technology Week organised by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

"We have started this programme and if it is terminated it would be a loss," he said.

The country's first astronaut, Datuk Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Sheikh Mustapha, had said the programme need not be continued as it was costly while the ministry's deputy minister Fadhillah Yusof had said that the programme slated for 2011 or 2012 needed to be reviewed due to economic factors.

"Society understands and sees this from a different angle of the actual mission of the government to have the programme and not just to send someone to the ISS," said Faiz.

The national space programme began in 2003 when Russia agreed to send a Malaysian to the ISS as part of a deal for Malaysia to buy 18 Sukhoi 30-MKM fighter jets worth RM3.42 bilion.

The country's first astronaut had spent 12 days on the ISS last October.

Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar's Family Sad Over "RM1.2 Million" Newspaper Report

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 10 (Bernama) -- The family of astronaut Datuk Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Sheikh Mustapha is sad and disappointed over a newspaper report that he has amassed RM1.2 million from giving talks since last year.

His brother Sheikh Taufik Shukor Al Masrie said the family regretted that Dr Sheikh Muszaphar's untiring efforts to share his aerospace experience with the young generation was manipulated by certain people.

"We did not ask for any credit be given to him, just sad that he had been treated this way," he told Bernama in an exclusive interview here Monday.

Sheikh Taufik described the report as a "grave tragedy" as it was reported by a newspaper belonging to an opposition party that claimed to uphold Islam.

"They do not give a hoot to our aerospace venture, unlike other Muslim countries that were proud of his (Dr Sheikh Muszaphar) achievement. I do not understand why they want to destroy our future."

Sheikh Taufik said the claim that his brother received RM8,000 per hour for giving talks was not true at all.

He did not deny that many people had acted as middlemen or third parties to arrange for the astronaut to deliver talks or just to motivate people.

"Schools normally come directly to me or my brother and no money is involved. However, for non-governmental organisations and the private sector, there are many middlemen who manipulate the situation."This can give rise to things that may lead to such claims," he said when commenting when a report by an opposition newspaper that Dr Sheikh Muszaphar charged RM8,000 per hour for talks.

The report said the astronaut had amassed RM1.2 million from 150 corporations since his return from the International Space Station (ISS) in Oct last year.

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar on Sunday denied that he had had asked for specific amounts to deliver talks on his aerospace experience.

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili had said Dr Sheikh Muszaphar and Major Dr Faiz Khaleed were contracted to the ministry until Dec 31 and thus could not charge for giving talks.

His deputy Fadillah Yusof was reported as saying the ministry would investigate the report.

Sheikh Taufik said he had wanted to reply to the report but was advised against it as it would be a waste of time.

"Their job is to pit one person against another and to rundown the government," he added.

On Dr Sheikh Muszaphar's reaction, he said although the astronaut was disappointed, it was nothing compared to what he had to go through before becoming an astronaut."My brother was calm and said the truth will prevail."

He said Dr Sheikh Muszaphar received many invitations but were careful as he did not want to be seen as a celebrity but an educator.

Meanwhile, his father Datuk Sheikh Mustapha Sheikh Shukor denied those who attended his talks were forced to buy the book "My Journey To Space" that related his experience during training and when at the ISS.

"I hope the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry will defend my son now that he can be considered a son of the state," he added.

No Complaints Received On Dr Sheikh Muszaphar

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 8 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Science, Techonology and Innovation (MOSTI) has not received any official complaints regarding an allegation by a local daily that national astronaut, Datuk Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Sheikh Mustapha, charged RM8,000 an hour to give a lecture.

Its minister Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili said if the allegations were true, the complainant could make an official complaint to the ministry.

"So far we have not received any official complaints. If the newspaper's allegations are true then the complainant can file an official complaint and we will go through the matter to see if it is against the contract (the governmnet has with him)," he said when met after the National Innovation Awards ceremony, here today.

Ongkili explained that the government's contracts with national astronauts Dr Sheikh Muszaphar and Major Dr. Faiz Khaleed will expire on Dec 31.

He said based on the contract signed by the astronauts and the ministry, they must take part in all promotional programmes arranged by the ministry and its agencies.

They are also prohibited from receiving any rewards other than those from the ministry, he said.

When asked if the contracts of both astronauts would be renewed, Ongkili said they proposed to renew Dr Faiz's contract to prepare for the future mission, while they have not received an application from Dr Sheikh Muszaphar to renew his contract.

China Awards Outstanding People In Spacewalk Mission

BEIJING, Nov 7 (Bernama) -- China held a meeting Friday morning to award people who made outstanding contributions to the Shenzhou VII manned space flight, Xinhua news agency reported.

Chinese President Hu Jintao, Premier Wen Jiabao and other top leaders Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang and He Guoqiang attended the meeting.

Vice-Premier Li Keqiang announced a decision jointly made by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the State Council and the Central Military Commission, which decides to award Zhai Zhigang with the title of "Space Flight Hero" and Liu Boming and Jing Haipeng with the title of "Heroic Astronaut".

Chinese President Hu Jintao presented the three with medals and certificates to mark their outstanding performance during the spacewalk mission.

He said Chinese astronauts' successful spacewalk was an important milestone in the country's space flight history and was one of the major achievements in building an innovative nation.

Chang Wanquan, chief commander of the manned space project said that the success of Shenzhou VII's space flight showed the great strength of national cohesion and boosted the confidence of people working for space missions to make new achievements.

Chang said that more than 110 research institutes were involved in the mission, and more than 3,000 organizations nationwide were offering co-ordination and helps.

Zhai Zhigang, speaking on behalf of the Shenzhou VII space flight team, said completing the mission successfully was their lifelong dream and biggest honor.

He said the space walk he conducted was a small step of himself but a big step for the Chinese nation.

Shang Zhi, general director of the mission's spacecraft system, said that Chinese scientists and researchers are ready to begin the next phase of space mission, which focusing on the spacecraft's rendezvous and docking in orbit and the manufacture of space laboratory.

Angkasawan Accepted Contributions But Never Demanded A Single Cent

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 16 (Bernama) -- The nation's first astronaut has admitted to accepting contributions when giving talks.However, Datuk Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Sheikh Mustapha denies allegations he had received, among others, RM8,000 an hour for giving talks.

He said it was the norm for him to give talks in schools for free."I hope we can resolve this unfortunate incident (allegations) because its negative impact would affect my ability to continue giving talks to schools in the country.

"(Nevertheless) I have spoken to Science, Technology and Innovation Deputy Minister Fadilah Yusof and given a detailed explanation...and he was happy and satisfied with my explanation," he added.

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar was speaking to reporters after flagging off and taking part in the Sixth Batik Fun Walk 2008 here, Sunday.

Meanwhile, Penyayang chairman Nori Abdullah, who organised the walk, was exuberant with the number of participants taking part in the event, especially since some of the proceeds would be donated to the Penyayang Pesakit Kanser charity.

"I am happy with the number of participants taking part this year, which is about 1,200. This is double the number of participants we had last year."It is also heartening to know that these participants will help make life a little easier for cancer patients," she said.

Her husband, Rembau Member of Parliament Khairy Jamaluddin, showed his support for his wife's programme in being a participant in the event.

Review Likely Of Plan To Send Second Astronaut Into Space

PETALING JAYA, Nov 3 (Bernama) -- A review seems likely of the plan to send the country's second astronaut into space in 2011 or 2012 in view of the uncertain global economy.

Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Fadhillah Yusof said today priority had to be given to more important programmes in view of the current economic situation.

Major Dr Faiz Khaleed, the candidate to make the space trip, would continue to attend the scheduled training sessions to create awareness and kindle the interest of young people in science and technology, which is necessary to boost the nation's competitiveness, he told reporters after launching an ISO 26000 seminar on " Guidance on Social Responsibility: Impact on Trade and Social Development in Southeast Asia", here.

Fadhillah said that if necessary the priority for the programme would be lowered or the programme postponed, but the decision would have to be made by the Cabinet.

The National Angkasawan (Astronaut) Programme was launched in 2003 after the Russian government agreed to help send a Malaysian to the International Space Station (ISS) in geo-stationary orbit as part of a technology transfer deal tied with Malaysia's purchase of 18 Russian Sukhoi fighter jets.

Datuk Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Sheikh Mustapha became the first Malaysian astronaut when he spent 12 days in the ISS in October last year.

Malaysia's First Planetarium To Be Upgraded Using Warner Bros. Expertise

KUCHING, Oct 17 (Bernama) -- The Sultan Iskandar Planetarium here, Malaysia's first astronomy education centre, is to be upgraded with the possibility of using expertise from Warner Bros, one of the world's largest producers of film and television entertainment.

Science, Technology and Innovation Deputy Minister Fadillah Yusof who disclosed this, said the ministry was prepared to assist the planetarium in this effort.

"The country's first planetarium which has been in operation for 19 years is now in need of upgrading in terms of infrastructure, in line with current technological developments.

"The ministry will cooperate with the Sarawak government to identify aspects or areas which need to be improved in order to continuously draw people to the planetarium and avoid boredom for the visitors.

"If possible, we want to create realistic situations during the screenings at the planetarium," he told reporters after launching its "Mirrordome" digital screening, today.

For instance, Fadillah said, visitors watching on the screen, a rocket being launched into space might "experience" what the astronauts were going through, and his could happen with Warner Bros. expertise.

"Perhaps the seats need to be changed so that the visitors could 'feel' the vibrations when the rocket is launched into space or hit a meteor," he added.

Fadillah said the use of Mirrordome technology was the beginning of the upgrading process, while the initiative of the Sarawak government which was responsible for the daily operations of the Sultan Iskandar Planetarium should be emulated by others.

The Mirrordome technology allows for digital film screening while previously a projector was used for showing the planets and stars to the planetarium visitors.

The technology application was contributed by Paul Bourke, a computer visualisation researcher from the University of Western Australia.

On the state government's request from the federal government to set up a science centre in Sarawak to promote interest in science among the younger generation, Fadillah said his ministry was prepared to study it but the decision would depend on the country's financial situation.

China To Issue Commemorative Coins For Maiden Spacewalk Success

BEIJING, Sept 29 (Bernama) -- The People's Bank of China, the central bank, said on Monday that it would issue a set of gold and silver coins on Oct 10 to commemorate the success of the country's maiden spacewalk.

The issuance comprises 30,000 gold coins, with a face value of 150 yuan (US$22) each, and 60,000 silver coins, with a face value of 10 yuan each, Xinhua reported Monday.

The head of each coin will have the solar system design while the tail will bear a color portrait of a taikonaut conducting a spacewalk and the Chinese words "To commemorate the success of China's first spacewalk", the central bank said.

The coins are produced by Shenyang Mint and will be distributed by the China Gold Coin Inc., it said.

Zhai Zhigang, the first Chinese to walk in outer space, and the other two astronauts in the Shenzhou-7 spacecraft safely returned to earth from a historic mission Sunday afternoon.

China's Spacewalk Team Returns To Rousing Welcome In Beijing

BEIJING, Sept 29 (Bernama) -- Hundreds of people lined the streets to give a rousing welcome to China's three astronauts when they returned to the Beijing Aerospace Centre on Monday morning after the space walk mission.

Flight commander Zhai Zhigang, who performed the extra vehicular activity (EVA) and fellow crew members Liu Boming and Jing Haipeng, dressed in blue uniforms and black boots, were garlanded and showed with bouquets, state television showed.

They appeared in good spirits as they waved and smiled to the crowd, each standing in the back of open-top sedans with Zhai in the lead.After the brief parade, the astronauts will undergo two weeks of quarantine to check on their physical condition.

Zhai's walk in space triggered another wave of China patriotism after the country's table-topping golden harvest in the recent Olympic Gamesin Beijing and another remarkable earlier feat of taking the Olympic flame up Mount Everest, the world's highest peak.

The latest Shenzhou VII mission, the third manned flight by China in five years, was closely followed by the Chinese leadership with President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao congratulating the astronauts and shaking hands with ground command centre workers.

"It was a glorious mission, full of challenges with a perfect ending. I feel proud of the motherland," said Zhai after stepping outside the space capsule that landed in Inner Mongolia on Sunday evening.

He had worn a China-made spacesuit, considered another breakthrough for the country's space technology.

Space mission spokesman Wang Zhaoyao revealed China's ambition to aim for a manned moon landing but gave no timetable for that.

The next step is to assemble a space laboratory in 2010 and a space station by 2020.

The eighth and ninth Shenzhou, meaning divine vessel in Chinese, missions are unmanned to test out docking technology.

Shenzhou VIII will lift off "in early 2009, only months from now", an inside source with the project's rocket system told the China Daily.

The launch of Shenzhou IX is also planned for next year, followed by Shenzhou X, the next manned journey to set up the space laboratory.

Shenzhou VII Returns Safely To Earth After Historic Spacewalk

BEIJING, Sept 28 (Bernama) -- China's latest space heroes with flight commander Zhai Zhigang, who performed the country's first space walk, hurled back to earth and landed safely in the central steppes of Inner Mongolia on Sunday evening.

Applause and cheers greeted the three-men crew whose mission was broadcast in great detail over local television since they powered off on a Long March 2F rocket from the Jiuquan satellite launch centre in northwestern Gansu Province on Thursday.

Millions of Chinese were riveted on the 'live' broadcast by state television as the re-entry module floated steadily down to earth, tied to a giant parachute, two days before China's 59th national anniversary.

Premier Wen Jiabao arrived at the Beijing Aerospace Control Centre more than an hour earlier before the capsule's anticipated return 5.44 pm and applauded heartily when it touched ground a few minutes ahead of schedule.

Underscoring the national pride and breakthrough feat, President Hu Jintao was at the Jiuquan centre to see the astronauts off and he was again at the Beijing centre to congratulate the crew, lauding them for a "great job" done.

Zhai and fellow crew, Liu Boming and Jing Haipeng, were reported to be in fine shape after their 68-hour mission, and Zhai flashed a thumbs-up sign to the ground rescuers, according to state television, and stayed inside for a while to re-adapt to gravity.

State television showed a convoy of four-wheel vehicles speeding across the grassy plains towards the located capsule.

Three hundred search and rescue staff and six helicopters were mobilised for the landing and all five of China's satellite-tracking ships had been on standby in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans before Shenzhou VII took off.

Xinhua said the three astronauts will be quarantined for half a month.

"We can't see them during that period, but we can rest our hearts as long as they are on the earth," Zhai's wife, Zhang Shujing, was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

Zhai and fellow crew, Liu Boming and Jing Haipeng, add to the list of Chinese astronauts who flew on successful manned flights, going back to solo pioneer Yang Liwei in 2003 and pair of Fei Junlong and Nie Haisheng in 2005.

Yang, Fei and Nie all had asteroids named after them.

Shenzhou VII Locks In For Return To Earth After Space Walk

BEIJING, Sept 28 (Bernama) - The Shenzhou VII space mission that pulled off China's first spacewalk has entered into the journey back to earth and can expect a euphoric welcome on Sunday evening.

The return capsule carrying astronaut Zhai Zhigang, who performed the historic feat, and two other astronauts will touch down at about 5.40pm in the steppes of central Inner Mongolia, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

Set to be the new poster space hero is Zhai whose image has dominated newspapers and repeatedly replayed on television waving China's red national flag in space after slipping out of the space capsule on Saturday evening.

The 42-year-old former fighter pilot, as with all Chinese astronauts, is the first generation of China's 14 space explorers picked in 1998 for the country's ambition to mark its presence in space and build its own space station by 2020.

Zhai and fellow crew, Liu Boming and Jing Haipeng blasted off in a Long March 2F rocket from the Jiuquan satellite launch centre in northwestern Gansu Province on Thursday.

President Hu Jintao met the astronauts before their trip at the launch centre and spoke to them again from the Beijing Aerospace Centre after their achievement.

"The successful extra vehicular activity symbolises China has achieved a new breakthrough on manned space missions. All three of you have made a great contribution to China's undertaking of space technology," he said.

Another triumph lauded has been the China-made "Feitian" (lying in the sky) spacesuit worn by Zhai, a 10-layer outfit costing 30 million yuan (RM13.7 million) and weighing 120kg suit.

Shenzhou VII was China's third manned space mission after Shenzhou V which took off with solo astronaut Yang Liwei, now a national hero, and the subsequent Shenzhou VI flight with two other astronauts in 2005.

China's next step is to start work by 2010 to put together a space laboratory and by 2020 to build its own space station.

The country's space march will demand more astronauts and a spokesman, Wang Zhaoyao, told newsmen after the spacewalk that research had begun on developing woman astronauts.

China's astronaut training chief engineer Deng Yibing said a second selection of astronauts will be held after the Shenzhou VII mission.

Xinhua quoted Deng as saying that a fresh team may be involved in the Shenzhou X mission, which will seek another breakthrough in orbiter docking technology.

Some of the present group of astronauts, with average age of 40, may already be too old by then.

The eighth and ninth Shenzhou (meaning "divine vessel" in Chinese) missions will be unmanned to test docking technology first, Xinhua quoted Li Yuqing, a consultant of the Shenzhou VII mission as saying.

China's First Space Walk Set For Saturday

BEIJING, Sept 26 (Benama) -- China's first space walk attempt is set for Saturday to last 20 minutes and astronauts onboard the Shenzhou VII spacecraft have begun assembling the bulky spacesuits, a task that will take several hours.

Since the liftoff on Thursday night, the expedition has proceeded smoothly and the three astronauts have had their first meal and nap, mission spokesman Wang Zhaoyao told a news conference in Beijing.

Third manned flight took off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern Gansu province and has entered its destined orbit of 343km from earth."Our astronaut will stay in space for 20 minutes, that is our plan," he said.

The space walk, widely reported to be attempted by flight commander Zhai Zhigang, will be telecast 'live'.

Wang said the Extra-Vehicular Activity (EVA) is scheduled for 4.30pm Saturday subject to the conditions of the spacesuit and the astronaut.

During the EVA, he said it was important to ensure that communication between earth and space will not be disrupted.State media had reported that 42-year-old Zhai would don a 120kg China-made "Feitian" (fly to the sky) spacesuit with the assistance of fellow crew, Liu Boming, who will be standing by in a Russian developed "Haiying" (sea eagle) suit.

The third astronaut, Jing Haipeng, will be inside the re-entry module of the space craft which will make a return landing in Inner Mongolia on Sunday after a 68-hour voyage according to the schedule.

The success of the EVA is crucial to China's ambition of building its own space station in the next decade.

The chief designer of spacecraft who provided the name Shenzhou meaning "divine vessel", told the Xinhua News Agency on Friday that China would mass produce the model to shuttle astronauts to China's space station.

PUTRAJAYA: An experiment in space by Malaysia's first astronaut is a success with findings being patented overseas.

The Protein Crystallisation in Space experiment, which saw the successful testing of the effects of microgravity on protein enzymes, has been termed a breakthrough in the field. The experiment by Datuk Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor on behalf of Universiti Putra Malaysia's Prof Dr Raja Noor Zaliha Raja Abd Rahman was aimed at comparing the crystallisation of proteins in space with those crystallised on Earth.

The proteins were found to be crystallising on a larger scale in space, making it more accurate for Raja Noor to study the structure of protein enzymes.

"When we know how it acts, we can use the protein fully to benefit the oleochemical, food supplement and pharmaceutical industries.

"By producing our own enzymes, we can sell them to generate income for the country or even improve the job market in the industries," Raja Noor Zaliha said after the opening of a workshop on microgravity sciences at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre here yesterday.

The patent has been filed here, in Europe, the United States and Japan, with the protein crystallisation technology already in use.

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili said the research component of the space programme would continue for the next five years and was likely to be included in the 10th Malaysia Plan. The cabinet will decide on the programme scale and funding.

Malaysians Of All Ages Participate In 51st Merdeka Celebration

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 31 (Bernama) -- The 51st Merdeka Day parade at the Dataran Merdeka here was not only participated by Malaysians of all races and religions but also included the various age groups.

The national-level celebration today included, for the first time, 150 pre-school pupils in the parade and mammoth procession comprising 16,433 participants including police pensioners.

With the theme 'Unity, the Thrust of Success', the parade began to assemble immediately upon the arrival of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Nur Zahirah.

Earlier, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, together with his wife Datin Seri Jeanne Abdullah, arrived in a white Proton Pesona electric car driven by Abdullah himself.

His deputy, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor arrived in a red Proton Savvy driven by Najib.

The parade and procession began with the national anthem 'Negaraku' being played as a Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) helicopter flew past carrying the 'Jalur Gemilang' and the Malaysian Armed Forces' flag and emitting red, blue and yellow-coloured smoke, the colours of the Malaysian flag.

Tuanku Mizan then inspected the Guard of Honour mounted by four officers and 103 men from the First Royal Malay Regiment.

The ceremony then proceeded with the raising of the Jalur Gemilang as the national anthem 'Negaraku' was sung and the artillery fired 14 rounds.

This was later followed by the singing of patriotic songs 'Jalur Gemilang', 'Cemerlang, Gemilang, Terbilang', and the theme song for the celebration "Perpaduan Teras Kejayaan", sung by a 2,000-member choir group from the teaching colleges.

Seven secondary school students, representing the various ethnic groups in the country, led by Mohd Hafizul Akhmal Azeman, then read the "Rukunegara" which was followed by shouts of 'Merdeka' reverberating seven times.

The Dataran Merdeka then transformed into a sea of colours as 2,880 students staged a field performance carrying the theme 'Unity, the Thrust of Success' which included a drill formation and martial arts presentation, and aerobics, which were interspersed with human graphics performed by students of several schools in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur.

The parade began with a procession carrying a mammoth Jalur Gemilang and the flags of the various states by trainees of the National Service Training Programme, including a contingent of 30 national figures from the various fields.

They included national astronaut Datuk Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, national badminton coach Datuk Misbun Sidek, social activist Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye and environmental activist Karam Singh Walia riding in national cars.

Enzyme Tested In Space By Malaysian Astronaut Gets US Patent

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 2 (Bernama) -- The Geobacillus Zalihae enzyme derived from protein crystallisation that was tested in space by Malaysian astronaut Datuk Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor last year has received a patent in the United States.

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili said the rights for the patent for the enzyme, named after researcher Prof Raja Noor Zaliha Raja Abdul Rahman, were also filed in Malaysia, Europe and Japan.

"Four more items of research conducted in space on the same expedition, and involving cells and microbes, are in the final process of development and are expected to be completed by the first quarter of next year," Ongkili told reporters after launching a workshop on Microgravity Science here Tuesday.

The objective of the two-day workshop, which gathered 150 local and foreign participants, including 20 who presented research papers, was to study and discuss the experiments carried out by Dr Sheikh Muszaphar.

Meanwhile, Raja Noor Zaliha, of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), said the enzyme could be used for industrial purposes like in the production of cleansers, pharmaceutical products and food supplements.

"This enzyme can generate income and, if we produce this enzyme, it can provide job opportunities to graduates majoring in biotechnology.

"We can also sell the technology to other countries as the market potential for the enzyme is really big," she said.

She said the research on protein carried out in space was important as bigger protein crystals could be formed there, twice the amount that could be produced on earth.

"A bigger crystal is needed to view the structure of protein, how it acts and how it can be utilised fully," she said.

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar went into space in a Russian Soyuz TMA-11 spacecraft on Oct 10 last year, conducted the experiments in the International Space Station (ISS) and returned to earth in a Soyuz TMA-10 spacecraft on Oct 21.

Angkasawan says space programme should concentrate on education

KUANTAN: The country’s space programme should focus on education and ensure sound basic knowledge in mathematics and science subjects at the earliest age possible, Angkasawan Datuk Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor said.

He added that there was more to the space programme than just sending people into space.

“It is about how to get the technology, acquiring the knowledge and fuelling the interest and imagination of the young.

“It is about moulding a strong grassroots who have a good grasp of mathematics and science,” he said after delivering a talk to students at Shahputra College here recently.

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar agreed that the country should postpone any plans to send another Malaysian to space and, instead, concentrate on having a more objective plan that would define the nation’s direction to develop its space programme.

He urged the Government, especially the Education and Science, Technology and Innovation ministries, to play a bigger role including creating job opportunities for those with a background in aeronautical engineering.

“There are about 450 aeronautical engineers in the country but only 10% are working as aeronautical engineers. The rest are working in other lines,” he said.

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar cited the Korean government as an example, saying that the country had sent an astronaut much later than Malaysia but already had a five-plan space programme.

“The pace is going very slowly for Malaysia. I get frustrated at times,” he said.

However, the 35-year-old orthopaedic surgeon would not be alone in his crusade to get the nation interested in space, science and mathematics as he planned to form an association with 59 other astronaut candidates who had vied to become the first Malaysian to be sent to space.

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar said it would be called the Angkasawan Association of Malaysia and members would chip in to deliver talks and conduct activities that would motivate youngsters.

On the results of experiments carried out in space, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor said the findings were expected to be released early next month at a gathering that would attended by local and international scientists.

He described the findings as promising.

Earlier in his talks, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar said that if the Government wanted to send another astronaut to space, it should be something more challenging than what he had done.

“They could send a woman astronaut, do a space walk or stay for a longer duration,” he said.

When fielding questions from the audience, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar said there were two things he missed most when he was in space - a shower and the smell of nature.

The good-looking angkasawan added that he still had two dreams to fulfil - to be a pilot by 2013 and to work with children in Africa.

Starstruck with Angkasawan

DESPITE having microphones at the audience area, many female students preferred to share Angkasawan Datuk Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor’s microphone on stage.

Some were clearly nervous and starstruck with the country’s first astronaut when they posed their questions at the Q&A session after his talk attended by schools from all over the state at the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) yesterday.

One after another, they asked him about his life in space. When a girl asked him why an astronaut must not have surgical scars or teeth filling, he answered that this was because surgical stitches may open up and teeth filling may fall off in space where there was zero gravity.

In his talk earlier, he said he had wanted to go to space since the age of 10 and his dream became a reality 25 years later.

“This is proof that dreams do come true if you just believe in yourself and work towards it. I was short listed from more than 11,000 hopefuls,” he said, adding that his next aim was to become a pilot by 2013.

He said for many years, he had felt a void in his soul, which he tried to fill by doing international charity work.
“I finally found my soul in space. I didn’t want to come back,” he said.

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar also showed a slideshow followed by a video, which he took on board Russia’s Soyuz TMA-10 spacecraft.

The video included clips of him getting into his sleeping bag, performing his prayers, cleaning his teeth, shampooing his hair and spinning the gasing which only stopped moving after two days.

“It’s not only about physical strength, we need to be strong mentally as well,” he added.

He said when he was preparing for the trip to the International Space Station on Oct 10, last year, he got rid of his fear of heights by doing regular bungee jumping.

During the selection process, the candidates had to stay in Pulau Lumut for three days without food and sleep to test their endurance, he said.

Keeping cervical cancer in check

KUALA LUMPUR: A non-governmental organisation has been formed to reduce the high incidence of cervical cancer in Malaysia.

Called Cervical Cancer Awareness Association (Cares) and located at Primanora Medical Centre, it will provide screening and raise awareness among women.

Cares ambassador and Malaysia's first angkasawan Datuk Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor said: "After doing cancer research through the angkasawan programme, my perspective about cancer has changed. That was one of the reasons I decided to support Cares' efforts."

Cervical cancer is the second leading cancer after breast cancer, with 2,000 to 3,000 cases detected yearly.

Medical adviser for Cares, Datuk Dr Nor Ashikin Mokhtar, said unlike other cancers, cervical cancer could be prevented.

Malaysia to share results of tests aboard International Space Station

Malaysia will share the results of the experiments done on board of the International Space Station (ISS) with local and international scientists on Sept 2.

Angkasawan Datuk Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor said the studies made on three types of cancer cells and protein crystalisation in zero gravity would be announced at a special session to be held at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur.

"We have a very good and positive results which can help the scientists who are working in the respective areas," he said after a motivational talk at Shahputra College here yesterday.

He said the studies made on cancer cells would in a way help scientists to find cure for the disease.

"The results may not give an instant cure for cancer but will help us understand how the cells react in such a condition," he said.

KUALA PILAH: Malaysia's first astronaut Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor was conferred a Datukship here yesterday.

The 36-year-old was conferred the Darjah Dato Setia Negeri Sembilan which carries the title "Datuk" in conjunction with the 86th birthday of the Yang di-Pertuan Besar Negri Sembilan, Tuanku Ja'afar Tuanku Abdul Rahman.

"I accept the award with humility and gratitude. With this, I will forge closer ties with the state government to make a name for Negri Sembilan," said Sheikh Muszaphar after the investiture ceremony at Istana Besar Seri Menanti.

"I promise to do more for the people of Negri Sembilan. I am still the same person, and nothing excites me more than seeing the smiles on five-year-olds who aspire to be astronauts.

" He added that he had travelled to over 200 schools and universities in the country to give motivational talks.

Sheikh Muszaphar, who was accompanied by his fiancee, Dr Halina Yunos, was bestowed the title along with 18 others, including Genting Berhad strategic investments and corporate affairs head Justin Leong Ming Loong.

Three other recipients were State Secretary Datuk Norzam Mohd Nor, State Health, Science, Technology and Innovation Committee chairman Ismail Taib and State Tourism, Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Committee chairman Mohammad Razi Kail.

Badminton legend Ng Boon Bee, 70, who helped Malaysia win the Thomas Cup in 1967, received the Darjah Dato' Paduka Tuanku Ja'afar which carries the title "Datuk", along with 22 other recipients.

"I am very honoured and happy to be given this recognition. "This will be one of my best memories. "I thank the state government, especially Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, who has always recognised the contribution of the country's athletes."

Astronaut's Research Report To Go To Cabinet

SHAH ALAM, Aug 11 (Bernama) -- A report on the findings of the research and studies conducted by the country's first astronaut, Datuk Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, at the International Space Station (ISS) will be presented to the Cabinet by the end of this month, said Science, Technology and Innovations Minister Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili.

He said the report needed to be studied by the Cabinet first before it was announced to the public and only then could the future of the country's astronaut programme be considered.

"The Cabinet will decide on all future programmes, big or small, and the ministry will make suggestions.

"With our current economic situation we need to focus on investment in sectors that yield faster and provide maximum income, and this will have an impact on programmes such as the astronaut programme," he told a press conference after the ministry's monthly assembly and 2008 Excellent Service Awards presentation, here Monday.

Ongkili said although the second astronaut programme had not yet been decided on, the ministry would still send Major Dr. Faiz Khaleed to undergo training to ensure continuity of Malaysia's space programme.

Partial Lunar Eclipse On Aug 17

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 (Bernama) -- Astronomy enthusiasts in Malaysia will have the opportunity to witness a partial lunar eclipse on Aug 17.

According to the National Space Agency (Angkasa) in a statement here, people in the peninsular could see the eclipse from 2.25am to 6.44am while those in Sabah and Sarawak from 2.25am to 5.10am.

The phenomenon could also be seen live at Angkasa's website, www.angkasa.gov.my/planetarium.

In conjunction with the eclipse, Angkasa would host a special programme at the National Planetarium from Aug 12 to 17.

Among the activities were a drawing contest, quiz and lecture.

MOSTI Allocates RM4 Billion For Science And Technology Research

KUCHING, July 31 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Science Technology and Innovations (MOSTI) has set aside a RM4 billion fund for research works in science and technology, involving food production, agriculture and bio-fuel industry, in the 9th Malaysian Plan (9MP).

Its Deputy Minister, Fadillah Yusof, however, said part of the fund was also allocated for research and development (R&D) as well as product commercialisation projects.

"The ministry provides various funds for science and technology research which will benefit those involved in R&D in the country," he told reporters after visiting and presenting donations to the Kampung Gita Laut fire victims here Thursday.

Fadillah said the funds were aimed at helping various parties including the public and private institutions of higher learning, as well as private researchers to conduct certain study and research, such as the one conducted by Crown Research Centre on 'bintangor' and sago trees in Sarawak.

Meanwhile, he said an exhibition on science, technology and innovations would be organised by MOSTI at the Kuching Waterfront, starting Friday.

The three-day exhibition to be held in conjunction with the Sarawak Regatta 2008, would feature the second national astronaut, Major Dr Faiz Khaled.

Government To Reconsider Satellite Launch Pad At Kudat

NILAI, Aug 5 (Bernama) -- The government will reconsider the possibility of building a satellite launch pad in the country if it benefited the nation.

"The proposal to build one was made in the Eighth Malaysia Plan and identified Kudat in Sabah as the most appropriate location, " Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili told reporters after visiting Inno Biologics' bio-pharmaceutical complex at Bandar Baru Nilai here Tuesday.

Inno Bio is a subsidiary company of the Finance Ministry established specially to delve into the field of biotechnology.

Through its subsidiary, Inno Biologics Sdn Bhd, it offers gene-cloning using mammalian cells, development of bio-processes and bio-pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Ongkili said the proposal for the pad had been put on hold.

"We actually have the expertise with the cooperation of international bodies to build it given the vast extent of the South China Sea. That was the opinion of international experts.

"There is no allocation under the Ninth Malaysia Plan but I propose to bring it to the Cabinet," he said

On another matter, he said, the launch of the RazakSAT, the country's second microsatellite, scheduled for launch in September in the time slot provided by United States' Space Exploration Technology (SpaceX) has been postponed as the launch station has problems with the launch pad.

"With this new development, the RazakSAT launch is now delayed two years. I will informm the Cabinet. We are still negotiating with Astronautic Technology Sdn Bhd (ATSB) for a new date in the near future. If we cannot resolve the matter we will look for a new launch site," he said.

Aim high, urges space pioneer

LIKE cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin who was the first human to travel into space and astronaut Neil Armstrong who was the first man to walk on the moon, angkasawan Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor wants to fuel the imagination of the nation.

Malaysia’s first angkasawan said his mission was not merely to travel into space but to come home and inspire the young generation.

“My mission is also to change the mindset of Malaysians – especially the young. I believe that one day, we can even launch our own rocket into space.

“I have wanted to be an angkasawan since I was 10 years old. Along the way, I have been a model, doctor and restaurant owner. It took me 25 years to fulfil my dreams but I did it.

“Do not be afraid to try new things. Because I believe in myself, I know that no matter which field I am in, I will succeed.

“Nothing is out of reach if you believe in yourself. Write down your dreams on posters and put it up in your room.

“Read it out loud every day and it will inspire you to strive towards success,” he said, adding that it was a fallacy to say that women were less capable than men.

“My Russian Soyuz 15-S mission crew members were Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malechencko and American Peggy Whitson. Peggy is the International Space Station (ISS) commander and she is very capable.

“In fact, I think women are mentally stronger than men,” he said during the closing of the Brain Awareness Week (BAW) 2008 at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Dewan Budaya recently.

He was delivering a talk on ‘Brain in Space: Our New Frontier’.

Sharing his space experience with more than 500 students from all over the country, he said he had always insisted on being called an angkasawan even when undergoing training in Russia.

“In Russia, they are called cosmonauts and in America, they are astronauts. I think as a Malaysian, the correct term is angkasawan. We must be proud of our culture and language.

“It was very difficult for me to learn the Russian language so everywhere I went, I would say ‘Ya La Blu Tibia’ (‘I love you’ in Russian) to everyone. They really appreciated me trying to learn their language,” he said, adding that it was not easy to become an angkasawan.

“I went through so many physical and mental tests. I even had to answer a 1,000-question personality evaluation that included questions like ‘Do you like to sleep with one or two pillows?’

“Everything I said and did was evaluated by a team of psychiatrists to make sure that I was mentally fit for the mission.

“I had always been afraid of heights. I went bungee jumping every now and then to get over my fear,” he said.

Among the questions asked were whether Dr Sheikh Muszaphar played football in space and how space has changed his perception of life.

“Unfortunately, I did not play football in space – I would have loved to though. I did however play the gasing in space and because there was no gravity, it spun for more than a day. I actually got tired of waiting for it to stop,” he said.

He added that the experience in space taught him to look at the “bigger picture”.

“Nowadays, I don’t care what is being said about me. I worry more about trying to make the world a better place,” he said.

Blind girl inspired by Angkasawan

ALL these years, partially blind student Alfa Nur Aini Erman Afandi, 17, thought that the blind could never aspire to be enjoy adventures in space as astronauts.

But after attending a motivational talk by Malaysia’s Angkasawan Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, she realised that everything is possible, even for physically challenged people to go to space one day.
The St George’s Girls School Form Five student said Dr Sheikh Muszaphar had inspired the handicapped and now she was able to imagine being an astronaut in outer space.

“I can now imagine what it is like inside the International Space Station,'' she said.

Alfa Nur Aini said that after hearing the inspiring talk given by Dr Sheikh Muszaphar, she was now determined to do well in her forthcoming SPM examination.

“Who knows, one day I may be one of those going up into space,” she added.

He said the handicapped should not regard their condition as an obstacle to achieving success.

He later visited the Home’s Wellness Centre, which provided training in massage therapy and reflexology to the visually impaired.

Astronaut talks about marriage

THE nation’s Angkasawan Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor was bombarded with questions about his work and personal life during a visit to SMK Seberang Jaya in Butterworth recently.

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar met more than 100 students and talked about his experience onboard the International Space Station.

When one student asked why an Angkasawan couldn’t get married, he replied, “It is not that I have fertility problems but I have signed a two-year contract with the Government to remain single.

“But I do intend to get married in 2009,” he said to the laughing crowd.

When pressed further, he said he had been dating someone for five years.

Among the questions asked was how he went to the bathroom in outer space, whether he missed his family and his future plans after completing his space mission.

One student requested and re-ceived a hug from Dr Sheikh Mus-zaphar.

Form Four student Nurfitrah Rosman said she was excited to have the opportunity to meet Dr Sheikh Muszaphar.

“I have seen him on television. He is very inspiring with his spee-ches,” she said.

Prefect S. Visshnubathy, 15, said it was good for the students to hear all about the space mission from the nation’s Angkasawan.

Schoolteacher Hong Mee Tin said she was pleasantly surprised by Dr Sheikh Muszaphar’s humble and approachable nature.

“I have bought his late brother Sheikh Mustapha Shukor Al-Masrie’s book, Reaching for the Stars for my three-year-old son. My son is still too young to enjoy the book and I’m keeping it for him when he grows up,” she said.

Major role for Faiz

The Angkasawan, recently named NS programme icon, hopes to use his military and astronaut training to help trainees build confidence and understand the challenges they will be faced with not just at camp but also in life.

MORE confident, better communication skills, a more friendly and open outlook.
These are the qualities which Angkasawan Mejar Dr Faiz Khaleed hopes to see in National Service trainees when they complete their three-month stint in the various camps.

Mejar Dr Faiz, 28, who has been appointed icon for the National Service programme said such characteristics were very important when trainees move on to their working life or when they enter universities.

“It prepares them to be better individuals who can stand up among the crowd,” he said.

“I find the trainees very shy. When asked questions, they know the answers but are not confident to speak up. They are scared of people laughing at them.”

Mejar Dr Faiz said at the end of the day, he hoped that such weaknesses could be addressed. “It will be most satisfying to see the trainees acquire above average communication skills and to be brave enough to look into a person's eyes and introduce himself with confidence.

“Also I hope to see the trainees eventually picking up the qualities of a person who can rationalise things and make decisions which are mature,” he said.

“We want to nurture such optimistic Malaysians to be the bangsa Malaysia we can be proud of,” he said.

He added that one important aspect which must be spelt out clearly was human capital of high calibre.

“It is no point having the best skilled scientists or lawyers who lack character,” he pointed out.

“I also want to see the trainees overcoming their fears, such as fear of heights. They must ask themselves how far they can push themselves.”

On his role as the icon, Mejar Dr Faiz said he started joining trainees in the NS training last month.

“I hope to change the perception of these trainees towards the National Service training programme.

“This is where I come in to change their mindset. Although the programme also includes army-like modules, the focus is actually on character building – to instil leadership qualities, moulding them to be team players and inculcating in them other positive values,” he said.

He said in schools or universities, the trainees would not be exposed to such learning processes as it was heavily centred on academics.

“Once they understand the objective (of the NS training programme), they can go through the training process with an open mind and will benefit more from it,” he said.

Mejar Dr Faiz, who is a military dentist, was shortlisted along with orthopaedic surgeon Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor to be the first Malaysian in space.

On Oct 10 last year, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar made history by becoming the first Malaysian to fly to the International Space Station.

Both underwent training at the Gagarin Cosmonauts Training Centre in Star City near Moscow.
Drawing references from the military, he said, where soldiers were asked to carry out vigorous exercises, the focus in National Service was different because its objective was to test the mental stamina and ability of the trainees, not so much on the physical aspects.

Mejar Dr Faiz said he also intend to go to schools to give talks to clear any misconception about the programme.

“Some may even volunteer for the threemonth stint after getting a better understanding of the training programme,” he said.

On trainees facing difficulties adjusting to life in the camps, he said understanding every aspect of the training module was crucial.

“It's about being patient in facing pressure. Everyone has to assess their own capabilities, strengths and weaknesses. What you can do, I may not be able to do.

“Once you understand your strengths and weaknesses, you can overcome any obstacle,” he said.
Mejar Dr Faiz said he understands that not all could adapt to outdoor activities.

“Some are afraid of heights and dare not attempt the 'flying fox' activity. This is where we help them overcome their fears.

“We don't force them but instead let them assess and make their own decision,” he said.
They would be made to realise that if they did not overcome their fears, they would have to carry that burden with them for the rest of their lives.

“As a military man, I will be able to impart my training experience. My training in Russia for the Angkasawan programme will also be helpful in making them look at the bigger picture and understand the challenges in life,” he said.

To a question whether he is paid for his services, Mejar Dr Faiz said it was actually a “national service” on his part, too.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Angkasawan programme should continue, with the funding shared among the relevant ministries that will benefit from the aerospace industry, suggested Mejar Dr Faiz Khaleed.

The second Angkasawan said the space mission should no longer be about sending a Malaysian to space but for Malaysia to embark on the aerospace industry.

He said the industry that included manned space flight missions benefited many fields including communication, research, medical, defence and education.

“As the industry benefits many fields under many ministries, these ministries can share in the funding,” he said in response to Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili’s statement that the ministry presently had no money to embark on the second phase of the programme.

Dr Faiz said people must be clear that it was now about research and development.
“If you just want to send people to space, RM100mil is expensive. We must look at it as moving on to developing our aerospace industry.

“Developing research and development means investment,” he said, and pointed out countries, including China, which persisted with their space programme because of the far-reaching benefits.

On whether he was disappointed with the possibility that he would not get to go to space, he said: “I am always ready to serve the nation.

PUTRAJAYA: Training for Angkasawan Mejar Dr Faiz Khaleed will go on despite the country’s space programme coming to a virtual halt.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the Government was analysing the “cost benefit” of the first space mission and whether it should go on.

“If financial problems are an obstacle, we may have to think of other options. The space mission may be postponed but we want to continue with the training for the astronaut,” he told reporters after meeting 11 Indonesian parliamentarians at his office here yesterday.

Najib was commenting on reports that the country’s space programme looked to be “as good as grounded” after Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili revealed there was no money left for it.

In the first phase of the programme, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Sheikh Shukor and two other astronauts blasted into space in a Russian-built Soyuz 11 rocket from Baikonour in Kazakhstan on Oct 10 last year.

It was partly funded by the deal related to the purchase of Sukhoi SU30MKM fighter jets from the Russian Government.

On the statement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi that the fuel subsidy would be restructured into a fairer system to benefit medium and lower income groups, Najib said the move was necessary to take into account the “leakages”.

International Contributions For IIS

The international partners, Canada, Japan, the European Space Agency, and Russia, will contribute the following key elements to the International Space Station:

Canada is providing a 55-foot-long robotic arm to be used for assembly and maintenance tasks on the Space Station.
The European Space Agency is building a pressurized laboratory to be launched on the Space Shuttle and logistics transport vehicles to be launched on the Ariane 5 launch vehicle.
Japan is building a laboratory with an attached exposed exterior platform for experiments as well as logistics transport vehicles.
Russia is providing two research modules; an early living quarters called the Service Module with its own life support and habitation systems; a science power platform of solar arrays that can supply about 20 kilowatts of electrical power; logistics transport vehicles; and Soyuz spacecraft for crew return and transfer.
In addition, Brazil and Italy are contributing some equipment to the station through agreements with the United States.

The International Space Station

The International Space Station is the largest and most complex international scientific project in history. And when it is complete just after the turn of the century, the the station will represent a move of unprecedented scale off the home planet. Led by the United States, the International Space Station draws upon the scientific and technological resources of 16 nations: Canada, Japan, Russia, 11 nations of the European Space Agency and Brazil.

More than four times as large as the Russian Mir space station, the completed International Space Station will have a mass of about 1,040,000 pounds. It will measure 356 feet across and 290 feet long, with almost an acre of solar panels to provide electrical power to six state-of-the-art laboratories.

The station will be in an orbit with an altitude of 250 statute miles with an inclination of 51.6 degrees. This orbit allows the station to be reached by the launch vehicles of all the international partners to provide a robust capability for the delivery of crews and supplies. The orbit also provides excellent Earth observations with coverage of 85 percent of the globe and over flight of 95 percent of the population. By the end of this year, about 500,000 pounds of station components will be have been built at factories around the world.

U.S. Role and Contributions

The United States has the responsibility for developing and ultimately operating major elements and systems aboard the station. The U.S. elements include three connecting modules, or nodes; a laboratory module; truss segments; four solar arrays; a habitation module; three mating adapters; a cupola; an unpressurized logistics carrier and a centrifuge module. The various systems being developed by the U.S. include thermal control; life support; guidance, navigation and control; data handling; power systems; communications and tracking; ground operations facilities and launch-site processing facilities.

ISS Science Highlight: STS-124/1J Every Day is Earth Day on the International Space Station

There may be only one place in the universe which can be the subject of 300,000 and counting photos and still never get old. It is the same place that astronauts spend hours upon hours of their free time watching, for months, yet still can't get enough. It's not a distant galaxy, or a spectacular nebula. It's simply home -- our planet Earth.

Of all the things astronauts speak of after their flights, the view of Earth remains their most consistent, indescribable, awe-inspiring constant.

Imagine looking out your window and seeing the planet pass below at 17,500 miles per hour every day, circling it each 90 minutes. That's the view for astronauts living and working on the International Space Station for six months at a time, orbiting 220 miles above the ground. Every day is Earth Day aboard the station.

The station provides an incomparable vantage point from which to observe, monitor and even discover Earth. A high quality optical window, located in the U.S. Laboratory, Destiny, was designed just for that purpose.

"Astronaut photographs of Earth are taken from the human perspective from space,” said Sue Runco, Earth remote sensing scientist at Johnson Space Center. “Just the fact of seeing Earth as another human sees it, is why people often can relate to them much greater than they can to satellite imagery."

Astronauts are trained in meteorology, geology, oceanography and environmental science in advance of their mission to maximize their observations of Earth. They use an array of professional digital cameras and lenses to capture the images, and, more recently, high-definition video.

A team of scientists on the ground helps the crews identify upcoming photo opportunities. The scientists send daily messages to the crew with specific times, locations and background on the areas of interest. Those areas can range from coral reefs to alpine glaciers to smog over industrial regions.

The unique documentation has become a valuable asset to researchers who use the data to help illustrate changes over time. By comparing photos from space of areas of interest, they can develop maps of land cover change, identify changes in Earth’s atmosphere and document changes in water levels, vegetation or even urban sprawl.

Their photos also serve as the “eyes of the world” – giving us never seen before images of hurricanes from above or squall lines as they develop. Unlike satellites, astronauts can actively search and identify new developments below them. During Expedition 13, Flight Engineer Jeff Williams was the first person to identify an erupting volcano of which even ground scientists were unaware.

"Astronaut photography of Earth has some unique aspects that aren't found in most satellite imagery,” said Runco. “There is a person behind the camera, and they use their judgment and training to pick the features they will photograph and the angle they will use.

Because of their orbit tracks and variable imaging times the lighting will be different which emphasizes different features. They operate in a mode of real-time discovery to see features of interest and document them in a way that is not possible with satellites.” Because it must rely on as few supplies as possible, the space station uses several very green principles in its daily operations. Water aboard the complex is recycled, not for drinking use, but to provide air for the complex. The water is split into hydrogen and oxygen. The oxygen is then used for breathing air while the hydrogen is vented overboard. All the electrical power on the station is generated by more than a half-acre of solar panels. Future systems may also even recycle the crew's exhaled breath -- combining the carbon dioxide scrubbed from the cabin atmosphere with hydrogen to create additional water.

Learning to use resources onboard the ISS for sustainable living is a smaller version of learning about the larger space platform, Earth, its resources, changes, and effects on sustainable living.

ISS sentiasa mengelilingi orbit pada ketinggian kira-kira 400 kilometer dari bumi. ISS didiami empat krew yang sentiasa menjalankan pelbagai aktiviti seperti eksperimen saintifik dan membina ISS yang dijangka siap pada 2009.

Suhu di ISS ditetapkan antara 22 hingga 26 darjah Celsius dan dikawal oleh pusat kawalan misi di Moscow dan Houston. Tekanan dan kandungan udara adalah sama seperti di bumi. Kandungan oksigen, karbon dioksida dan nitrogen dikawal dengan teliti oleh pakar bagi memastikan sesuai untuk krew.

Sistem amaran akan berbunyi jika ada perubahan dalam kandungan udara di ISS dan tindakan sewajar akan diambil untuk memastikan keselamatan krew di ISS.

Sementara itu, waktu di ISS adalah mengikut GMT (Masa Min Greenwich). Saya memakai tiga jam tangan di ISS bertujuan pertama, melihat waktu solat mengikut waktu Kazakhstan; kedua, waktu GMT untuk kerja seharian dan ketiga, waktu Malaysia sebagai panduan waktu negara tercinta.

Di ISS, siang dan malam berlaku setiap 45 minit. Oleh itu, jam tangan amat penting dalam meneruskan kehidupan harian di angkasa lepas.

Coretan Angkasawan: Pulang ke Russia setiap 3 bulan

Sheikh Muszaphar perlu selesaikan kajian saintifik, jadi eksperimen untuk lihat kesan tubuh manusia terdedah kepada radiasi dan mikro graviti

SAYA kembali semula ke Russia pada 19 Februari lalu. Bukan untuk meneruskan latihan, tetapi eksperimen saintifik yang masih belum selesai. Tubuh badan saya dijadikan bahan eksperimen oleh saintis Russia, Jepun dan Eropah untuk melihat kesan sampingan apabila tubuh manusia terdedah kepada radiasi dan mikro graviti di angkasa lepas.

Sejak awal lagi, saya bersetuju menjadikan diri sebagai bahan eksperimen demi kebaikan manusia sedunia. Setakat ini, saya tidak mengalami sebarang kesan sampingan. Tubuh saya sudah kembali normal.

Namun pemeriksaan terhadap tubuh ini akan diteruskan setiap tiga bulan selama setahun untuk memastikan segala-gala kembali normal. Bagaimanapun, kesempatan ke Russia membawa kembali pelbagai kenangan manis. Di negara inilah saya bertapa selama setahun untuk berlatih menjadi seorang angkasawan. Bahasa Russia masih segar di ingatan.

Saya tidak menghadapi masalah berkomunikasi dengan mereka. Seolah-olah seperti pulang ke kampung halaman. Saya tinggal di StarCity selama empat hari dan berkesempatan berjumpa kawan lama, cosmonaut termasuk tenaga pengajar Russia yang membimbing saya selama ini demi memastikan saya mencapai impian ke angkasa lepas. Mereka seperti keluarga sendiri.

Saya juga berjumpa krew yang kembali bersama, termasuk cosmonaut Korea Selatan yang akan ke angkasa lepas April ini. Ko San dan So-Yeon, dua rakan karib saya yang jelas menampakkan keghairahan menanti detik sebagai rakyat Korea Selatan pertama ke angkasa lepas.

Saya tersenyum kepada diri sendiri. Inilah perasaan yang saya alami sebelum ini. Saya menghabiskan masa selama empat jam bersama mereka menceritakan pengalaman dan menunjuk ajar mereka. Ini adalah talian persahabatan antara dua negara, Malaysia dan Korea Selatan.

Di StarCity, pelbagai ujian dijalankan termasuk pemeriksaan darah dan kepadatan tulang (bone density). Di angkasa lepas, pelbagai perubahan berlaku terhadap fisiologi tubuh termasuk kardiovaskular, otot dan tulang.

Manusia dicipta untuk hidup di bumi dan apabila manusia menjelajah angkasa lepas, pelbagai perubahan yang agak ekstrim berlaku. Dalam waktu yang singkat, iaitu pada hari ketiga di angkasa lepas, tulang manusia mula menampakkan kesan kerapuhan atau osteopenia. Bayangkan mereka yang tinggal di ISS selama enam bulan. Setakat ini, keputusan pemeriksaan terhadap tubuh saya kelihatan memuaskan. Tidak ada keputusan tidak normal. Syukur alhamdulillah. Ini semua adalah berkat doa rakyat Malaysia.

Apabila kembali ke Malaysia, suasana pilihan raya dapat dirasai. Setiap orang sibuk bercakap mengenai pilihan raya, baik di kedai kopi mahu pun pejabat.

Sejak awal lagi, saya berminat dalam bidang politik dan sering mengikuti perkembangan politik di tanah air walaupun berada di Russia. Namun belum terlintas untuk menceburi bidang politik secara aktif.

Orang sibuk berkempen mengenai pilihan raya, saya pula sibuk berkempen mengenai angkasa lepas. Kepuasan tidak terhingga pada diri ini tercapai apabila melihat senyuman pada anak kecil dan pelajar yang begitu bersemangat untuk menceburkan diri dalam bidang sains dan matematik.

Inilah matlamat dan tanggungjawab saya ketika ini. Tanggungjawab sepanjang hayat. Inilah janjiku untuk negara.

Permandangan dari angkasa

DI ISS kami dapat melihat bulan, bintang, bumi dan pelbagai pemandangan yang menakjubkan. Galaksi sungguh luas terbentang dan matahari naik dan turun setiap 45 minit. Saya tidak berapa pasti akan spiral galaksi atau elliptical galaksi yang dimaksudkan tetapi anda tidak dapat melihat akan galaksi itu kerana memerlukan peralatan teropong astronomi seperti yang ada di bumi.

Angkasawan tidak ada perasaan takut

KAMI diajar untuk tidak mempunyai sebarang perasaan takut. Apabila kembali ke bumi melalui ballistic reentry, fokus saya lebih kepada eksperimen yang berada dalam kapal soyuz kerana risau ia akan mengalami kerosakan. Saya sudah bekerjasama bersama saintis tempatan selama 2 tahun dan ketika itu sentiasa berdoa agar saintifik eksperimen itu tidak mengalami kerosakan.

Coretan Angkasawan: Panduan ibadah di ISS diiktiraf dunia Islam

Angkasawan negara bangga terbabit dalam usaha kembalikan keagungan Islam di mata dunia khususnya dalam sains dan astronomi.

PENJELAJAHAN angkasawan ke angkasa lepas bukan saja menarik minat rakyat Malaysia pada 10 Oktober 2007 malah membuka mata umat Islam di seluruh dunia. Walaupun saya adalah orang Islam yang ke-9 berada di angkasa lepas, amat penting bagi saya menekankan bahawa tanggungjawab sebagai umat Islam harus dilakukan tidak kira di mana kita berada sama ada di bumi atau angkasa lepas.

Persoalannya tiada siapa tahu bagaimana ibadah harus dilakukan sama ada berpuasa mahupun bersembahyang. Ini amat penting untuk menjadi panduan kepada bakal astronaut beragama Islam pada masa akan datang. Sekurang-kurangnya mereka boleh merujuk kepada panduan bagaimana ibadah dilakukan di Stesen Angkasa Lepas Antarabangsa (ISS).

Hakikatnya, Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia (Jakim) bertemu dengan ulama seluruh dunia sebelum menghasilkan satu garis panduan mengenai tanggungjawab umat Islam di angkasa lepas. Saya berasa bangga kerana dapat menerajui tanggungjawab ini dengan harapan mengembalikan keagungan Islam di mata dunia khususnya dalam sains dan astronomi. Saya berharap dapat memainkan peranan dalam menyatupadukan umat Islam seluruh dunia untuk mencapai kejayaan lebih gemilang.

Saya telah mendapat jemputan untuk berkongsi pengalaman khususnya dari negara Islam seperti Arab Saudi, selain beberapa negara lain termasuk Amerika Syarikat, Kazakhstan, Britain dan banyak lagi .

Di Amerika Syarikat, saya dijemput oleh Islamic Syurah Council, California pada 8 hingga 12 Mai 2008. Tujuan utama adalah penerimaan anugerah keamanan dari pihak terbabit atas sumbangan Islam dalam bidang sains dan angkasa lepas. Ia adalah satu pengiktirafan yang amat bermakna pada diri ini. Ia membuat saya untuk terus berjuang demi memartabatkan nama Islam ke arah sains dan teknologi.

Di samping itu, saya juga berkesempatan berjumpa dengan komuniti Islam di California, memberi ceramah di masjid di San Jose dan San Diego untuk berkongsi pengalaman dengan harapan untuk menyuntik inspirasi kepada mereka. Saya juga berkesempatan untuk memberi ceramah di California State Universiti kepada 1,000 pelajar yang mengikuti bidang "Islam and its contribution and direction". Amat mengasyikkan apabila lebih separuh daripada pelajar adalah bukan beragama Islam. Ini jelas menunjukkan minda pelajar Amerika Syarikat yang begitu berminat untuk mengikuti perkembangan Islam dengan lebih mendalam. Paling menyeronokkan apabila berpeluang berjumpa dengan kanak-kanak Islam yang begitu bersemangat bertanyakan mengenai kehidupan di angkasa lepas. Ramai di antara mereka yang bercita-cita untuk pergi ke angkasa lepas dan saya juga diajukan pelbagai soalan menarik.

Berjumpa dengan 250 rakyat Malaysia di California adalah pengalaman yang manis di mana kebanyakan daripada mereka adalah pelajar tajaan yang masih meneruskan pengajian mereka di sana. Saya diberi makanan ala Malaysia seperti kari ikan hingga ayam masak kurma. Saya berasa seolah-olah saya berada di negara sendiri.

Saya juga dijemput oleh pihak NASA untuk melawat Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) di Pasadena di mana ia bertanggungjawab atas pelbagai satelit yang dilancarkan untuk mengetahui dengan lebih mendalam mengenai planet. Saya juga didedahkan dengan pembikinan rovers Phoenix yang baru-baru ini telah membuat pendaratan di planet Marikh untuk mengetahui adakah ada kehidupan di planet itu. Amat mengagumkan apabila dapat mempelajari pelbagai teknologi canggih terkini yang dihasilkan oleh NASA.

Secara keseluruhan komuniti Islam di Amerika Syarikat khususnya di California terdiri daripada golongan minoriti pelbagai negara dan kebanyakannya golongan profesional. Islamic Shura Council mewakili komuniti Islam di Amerika Syarikat dan menjalankan pelbagai aktiviti kebajikan dalam membentuk perpaduan di kalangan umat Islam dan saya berasa amat berbangga kerana dapat menyumbangkan tenaga dan ilmu dengan harapan dapat menyemai kepentingan Islam khususnya kepada anak-anak Islam di Amerika Syarikat. Inilah janji saya apabila kembali ke bumi. Tidak ramai di kalangan Islam yang membabitkan diri dalam bidang aeroangkasa. Impian saya untuk mengumpul kesemua sembilan astronaut Islam yang menjelajahi angkasa lepas dan menjelajahi seluruh benua dalam memupuk semangat dan menukar minda umat Islam agar mengembalikan kembali keagungan dan kegemilangan Islam khususnya dalam bidang sains dan teknologi. Banyak lagi usaha yang harus dilakukan untuk mencapai matlamat ini.

Selepas benua Amerika saya juga telah berada di Brunei selama 3 hari dan berkongsi pengalaman bersama pelajar di negara itu. Sungguh menyeronokkan apabila melihat semangat yang ditunjukkan oleh anak kecil yang mempunyai impian tinggi untuk menerokai angkasa lepas. Impian mampu menjadi kenyataan sekiranya seseorang itu berusaha dengan gigih dan yakin dengan kemampuan sendiri dan sentiasa bersikap positif.

Kini saya berada di Sarawak melawat Bandar Miri dan Kuching untuk memberi ceramah kepada lebih 5,000 penduduk Sarawak. Saya bekerjasama dengan pustaka negeri Sarawak dalam memupuk sikap membaca di kalangan pelajar. "Knowledge is power". Kita seharusnya membaca sekurang-kurangnya sebuah buku setiap minggu. Amat penting untuk Malaysia dalam melahirkan modal insan yang berilmu dan berkualiti dalam mengejar impian Wawasan 2020 untuk menjadikan Malaysia sebuah negara yang cemerlang, gemilang dan terbilang.

Misi ke angkasa lepas bukan melancong

SEREMBAN 11 Jun – Angkasawan negara, Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Sheikh Mustapha menjelaskan sekali lagi bahawa misinya ke angkasa lepas bukan untuk melancong sebaliknya melakukan uji kaji saintifik.
Menurut beliau, uji kaji yang dilakukan itu begitu penting untuk kegunaan perubatan terutamanya dalam merawat pesakit kanser.

‘‘ Saya ke sana untuk melakukan uji kaji di Stesen Angkasa Antarabangsa (ISS),” kata Sheikh Muszaphar kepada kira-kira 500 pelajar dalam program motivasi di Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Dato’ Haji Mohd. Redza di sini semalam.

Sheikh Muszaphar memberitahu, ketika di angkasa lepas, beliau sempat mencipta sajak dan puisi selain mengenakan pakaian batik.

‘‘Saya juga menjadi umat Islam pertama yang berpuasa dan menyambut Hari Raya di ISS.

‘‘Ini semuanya untuk negara dan Malaysia kini berada setanding dengan negara lain khususnya dalam bidang penerokaan angkasa lepas,” katanya.

Pada program motivasi itu, Sheikh Muszaphar terus menyuntik semangat kepada golongan pelajar agar mengikuti jejak langkahnya menjadi seorang angkasawan pada masa hadapan.

Kata beliau, adalah wajar golongan pelajar meletakkan azam tinggi serta belajar bersungguh-sungguh untuk terus mengisi peluang dalam Program Angkasawan Negara sekali gus mengembangkan minat terhadap aktiviti berkaitan aero angkasa.

‘‘Jika pelajar berminat menjadi seperti saya sebagai angkasawan, saya minta supaya pelajar rajin-rajin belajar dan paling penting kita perlu fokus dalam setiap aktiviti yang dilakukan,” katanya.

Sheikh Muszaphar juga berharap pada masa akan datang lebih ramai wanita terpilih menyertai program tersebut dan diberi peluang untuk menjadi angkasawan negara.

‘‘Saya berharap selepas ini akan ada angkasawan wanita yang berlepas ke ISS.

‘‘Saya juga berharap lebih ramai anak kelahiran Negeri Sembilan turut berjaya meneroka ke angkasa lepas,” tambahnya.

Angkasawan wants more women involved

SEREMBAN, 11/06/2008: Angkasawan Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Sheikh Mustapha hopes more women will be given the opportunity to join the National Space Programme as many have shown keen interest in it.

He said there had been overwhelming interest in the field among women in Asian countries of late, and even South Korea had chosen a woman to complete a mission at the International Space Station (ISS).

"It is important to give them the opportunity to take part in the programme. I am sure they are capable.

"The field should not be confined to men as women are equally competent to complete a mission at the ISS," he said after delivering a motivational talk at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Dato' Haji Mohd Redza here yesterday, which was attended by 500 students.

Muszaphar said based on his observation from visiting schools and universities nationwide, many students were keen in Science and Mathematics and wanted to be an astronaut.

"Students should aim high and study hard to gain entry into the National Space Programme.

"They should also take part in aerospace activities," he said.

Muszaphar expressed disappointment with certain quarters for painting a negative picture of the space programme saying that it was a waste of money and a "vacation" in space.

The mission to space, he said was to conduct important scientific research in medicine, specifically in cancer research.

"I would like to stress that the mission to space was not a vacation, instead there was extensive research being carried out at the ISS, and the experiences gained there should be shared with all Malaysians."

Still mulling space capsule buy

PETALING JAYA: The final report on the cost-benefit analysis of the purchase of the Soyuz-TMA 11 capsule and second angkasawan programme will be tabled in cabinet next month.

Science, Technology and Innovation Deputy Minister Fadillah Yusof hoped the matter would be settled next month.

"We will report to the cabinet and they will decide whether the programme will be continued and also whether the purchase is necessary," he said after a golf tournament prize-giving ceremony yesterday.

He said the Malaysian government would only be interested in the Soyuz if it could benefit the country in terms of technology transfer and Malaysians could study and learn from it.

The government would negotiate with the Russian government to ensure Malaysia received a fully-equipped capsule and the technology that came with it.
"We will only make the purchase if this condition is agreed to by the Russian government and at the right price.

"If it is an empty one, we might not buy it, but this depends on an in-depth research by both the ministry and Malaysian National Space Agency."

The Soyuz carried Malaysia's first angkasawan, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Sheikh Mustapha, to the International Space Station in October last year.

Fadillah said no decision had been made in terms of allocation as research was still under way.

"If the cost is within our capability and the benefit to the country outweighs the cost, a positive decision might be reached."

He said the second angkasawan must do more than the first, especially in terms of research, and this might prolong his stay to up to six months in outer space.

"This is why we have to have a detailed study as the cost will be astronomical. Even a space tourist has to spend RM40 million," he said, adding that the government spent about RM30 million on the first angkasawan, including research.

Fadillah said because of the mixed feedback regarding the first angkasawan programme, the government had to ensure that the cost was justifiable.

"If we cannot justify it, then we might not send a second angkasawan."

The golf tournament was held in conjunction with the 16th World Congress on IT (WCIT) at the Saujana Subang Golf. Some 80 delegates participated in the tournament, including 10 foreigners.

The prize went to Tan Ee Ern, Tan Ban Eu, Ooi Thien Te and Daniel Cheing, who amassed a score of 53.

WCIT 2008, which began yesterday and will continue until Thursday, will discuss social and economic issues such as education, healthcare, environmental sustainability, global peace and security, as well as poverty and the digital divide.

The event, the largest gathering in the congress' 30-year history, is being held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

Second astronaut sees benefits of continuing space programme

KUANTAN: Malaysia's space programme should get its funds from the research and development allocation in view of its contributions to various fields, Mej Dr Faiz Khaleed said yesterday.

Dr Faiz, who will be the country's second astronaut, said the programme would not only benefit space science but would also help improve other industries including those related to medical and engineering.

"It should not only revolve around the issue of sending another Malaysian to space. We must look at the bigger picture," he said when asked to comment on the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry's decision to review the programme due to lack of funds.

Dr Faiz said the space programme should also involve other ministries and agencies as they could also benefit from it.

For example, he said the Higher Education Ministry could exploit the programme to boost research among local lecturers while the Education Ministry could use it to encourage students to excel in science and mathematics.

"Other ministries can also utilise the programme especially in mapping and telecommunication aspects," he said before giving a motivational talk to National Service (NS) trainees at the Cahaya Gemilang camp in Cherating near here.

Asked how he felt if the programme was stopped, Dr Faiz said it would be very disappointing as the country had already made a good start by sending its first angkasawan to the International Space Station.

However, Dr Faiz said he would accept whatever decision made by the government on the matter.

"I'm very grateful to the government as I have benefited a lot from the programme including joining the training in Russia," he said.

Dr Faiz, who is the NS icon, also told trainees that they could also achieve their dreams if they worked hard, and urged them to understand the objectives of the programme, which among others, would make them a better person and closer to others from different backgrounds.

Dr Faiz later joined NS director-general Datuk Abdul Hadi Awang Kechil and the trainees to perform the flying-fox cable sliding.

The government has not made a decision to shelve the country’s space programme though no funds are available for the second mission at the moment, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said today.

The Deputy Prime Minister said the government was keeping the option open pending completion of the cost-benefit analysis for the second mission.

He said the government had other options including continuing with the space training now and proceed with the second mission later if the programme was facing financial constraint.

Speaking to reporters after receiving eight Indonesian members of parliament at his office, Najib, who is also Defence Minister, said he liked Malaysia’s second astronaut Mej Dr Faiz Khaleed to continue with the space training.

Najib was asked to comment on news reports on the prospect of the space programme being scrapped as there was no money.

Russian Space Agency (Roskosmos) had offered to bring another Malaysian astronaut on a space mission in either 2010 or 2011 and Malaysia had decided on Dr Faiz as the candidate for the second mission.

In the first mission, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Sheikh Mustapha spent 11 days in space conducting scientific experiments at the International Space Station before returning to Earth on Oct 21 last year.

On another matter, Najib, who is also Barisan Nasional (BN) Chief Whip in the Dewan Rakyat, said BN members of parliament, who skipped Dewan Rakyat sittings without valid reasons, may not be considered to contest in the next general election.

Such action can be taken against BN backbenchers besides issuing warning, said Najib, adding that it has been the BN’s practice to encourage backbenchers to attend the sessions.

To a question, Najib said it was not compulsory for BN MPs to submit questions although they were encouraged to do so.

“Furthermore, only 12 questions are normally answered each day and the Dewan Rakyat usually had more than enough questions for the allocated question-and- answer session, he added.

Angkasawan Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Sheikh Mustapha said this in response to a Malay daily that suggested the Angkasawan Programme be put on hold for a while and efforts are made to educate the public.

"After coming back from my mission to space, I have been touring around the country to share my experience and knowledge that I have gained," said Sheikh Muszaphar after meeting students at the Maktab Rendah Sains Mara Pendang here yesterday.

Present was Sungai Tiang state assemblywoman Suraya Yaacob.

"And I found that, the young ones were still having difficulties in identifying planets and their general knowledge on space is lacking.

"I believe it would be better for us to use the cost of funding the mission to educate the people, especially the younger generation.

"If we do not have the proper awareness, it would be no point sending another Malay-sian to space. We have to consider the decision to send the second angkasawan carefully as it would involve a large sum of the people's money.

"He was also asked on suggestions to create awareness of the people.

Muszaphar said astronaut clubs could be set up in schools, and books on outer space could be published for primary school pupils.

He added that the National Science Centre could also play a bigger role in this awareness programme.

Second space trip runs into funds snag

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's fledgling space programme has run out of money and the country cannot afford to send a second angkasawan into space.

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili, who revealed this, said that based on the ministry's mid-term review, there was no budget to fund phase two of the angkasawan programme.

"There's zero money. The ministry will have to look for money if it wants to continue with the programme," said Ongkili, who added that he was still waiting for the cost-benefit analysis report.

He said that in principle, the government wanted to pursue the angkasawan programme, but subject to funds being available.

He added that the programme's successful first phase was facilitated by the fact that 70 per cent of the cost of training and sending the first angkasawan to space was offset by the purchase of the Sukhoi fighter jets from Russia.
"Also, the space programme is not just about sending Malaysians into space. It involves a broad spectrum of research in other sciences besides astronomy.

"So there are competing priorities and other social development needs. We have to ensure that the money spent is worth it."

JADUAL saya kini dipenuhi dengan program motivasi berkongsi pengalaman bersama pelajar di seluruh Malaysia. Ia bukan saja membabitkan kanak-kanak, malah sekolah dan universiti tempatan. Setiap hari saya mendapat panggilan supaya hadir ke majlis mereka untuk berkongsi pengalaman sebagai angkasawan negara.

Tidak lupa juga stesen radio dan rangkaian televisyen yang tidak henti-henti mengundang untuk menghadiri program mereka.

Minggu lalu, saya melawat Sekolah Seri Puteri Cyberjaya , Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam, Universiti Tun Abdul Razak Kelana Jaya, Universiti Malaysia Pahang, UiTM Melaka, Sekolah Menengah Sains Raub, Sekolah Menengah St John dan Universiti Multimedia.

Kadangkala dua atau tiga sekolah dalam sehari. Saya tidak sampai hati untuk menghampakan harapan pelajar apabila dijemput ke sekolah mereka walaupun pada Sabtu atau Ahad.

Suatu kepuasan tercapai dalam diri ini apabila dapat melihat senyuman pada bibir mereka. Inilah yang dijanjikan buat negara Malaysia setelah kembali dari angkasa lepas.

Jadual saya kini padat hingga Julai. Tidak lupa pula janji saya untuk MARA dalam lawatan “angkasawan pulang ke gagang” dan saya akan bermula bertapak di utara melawat Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) Pendang, Kepala Batas dan Taiping.

Banyak lagi sekolah yang masih belum diterokai, terutama di Sabah dan Sarawak. Saya berharap mereka dapat bersabar kerana saya pasti akan ke sana dalam masa terdekat ini. Cuma saya terkilan apabila sesetengah pihak sudah mendirikan kain rentang dan memberitahu, akan kehadiran angkasawan walaupun masih belum mendapat persetujuan daripada saya.

Saya menerima banyak emel dan surat mengatakan Dr Sheikh tidak datang seperti yang dijanjikan. Saya benar-benar berharap perkara ini tidak akan berulang kerana bersimpati kepada mereka yang datang dari jauh.

Apabila saya bermesra bersama pelajar, saya sering bertanyakan impian mereka dan ramai yang begitu bersemangat dan bercita-cita menjadi angkasawan. Saya sering menekankan bahawa anda tidak semestinya memilih angkasawan kerana peluang dalam bidang itu adalah terhad, tetapi boleh menjadi saintis, doktor dan jurutera angkasa lepas untuk membuat sumbangan dalam bidang angkasa lepas.

Penjelajahan saya ke angkasa lepas bukan saja membabitkan bidang sains, tetapi sastera dan Islam. Bagi bidang sastera, saya membawa baju batik, menulis sajak dan membuat lukisan untuk sumbangan kepada golongan seni.

Bagi umat Islam pula, cara berpuasa dan bersolat telah direkodkan dalam bentuk video untuk dikongsi bersama umat Islam seluruh dunia. Inilah kehebatan program angkasawan negara yang membabitkan setiap lapisan masyarakat.

Saya juga mengikuti perkembangan rakan karib, Yi Seo Yeon, wanita Korea Selatan yang pertama ke angkasa lepas. Beliau juga menjalani pelbagai eksperimen saintifik di ISS dan membawa makanan kegemaran Korea iaitu Kimchi dan akan tinggal di ISS selama 10 hari sebelum kembali bersama krew saya, Yuri Malanchenko dan Peggy Whitson.

Saya berharap Malaysia juga mampu menghantar wanita kita ke angkasa lepas pada masa akan datang. Ini sudah pastinya akan menjadi satu inspirasi kepada golongan wanita di Malaysia.

melihat bangunan mahupun kenderaan kerana kedudukannya terlalu jauh.

Ada peralatan komputer di ISS yang menunjukkan tempat-tempat yang kami lalui dan saya

berkesempatan untuk melihat Pulau Pinang apabila melalui kawasan Malaysia. Negeri yang begitu indah

apabila dapat melihatnya dari jendela ISS.

Ada pelbagai sebab mengapa pendaratan cemas berlaku. Berat badan yang berbeza juga boleh menyebabkan ‘ballistic reentry’ . Setelah dikaji, masalah kabel adalah punca mengapa kami terbabas sejauh 450 km dari sasaran.

National Service: Troubled youth could also benefit

SEREMBAN: The National Service programme may be used to instil discipline in troubled youth.

Deputy Defence Minister Datuk Wira Abu Seman Yusop said a suggestion to admit such youth into the programme had met with a positive response from the National Service Department.

"I think it is a good idea. These youth will benefit from participating in the programme because the programme modules are designed to instil a sense of discipline, morality and responsibility," said Abu Seman.

He said the department would look into the criteria for admission and how to fit them into the programme.

"I think the department will have no problem accommodating these troubled youth. This is a preventive measure that we can use to stop them from getting involved in social ills," Abu Seman said.

He said said this after opening a National Service programme at Kem PLKN Sri Perkasa in Mantin near here yesterday. Among those present were National Service Training Department director-general Datuk Abdul Hadi Awang Kechil and National Service icon angkasawan Major Dr Faiz Khaleed.

Yesterday was Dr Faiz's first visit to a national service camp since he was designated as the programme's icon by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Razak on March 2.

"We want the trainees to look at Dr Faiz as a role model so that they will be motivated to succeed in life. We might also designate more successful people as icons," said Abu Seman.

Abdul Hadi said Dr Faiz would visit as many camps as possible to meet the trainees and join in their activities.

"However, as Dr Faiz is a busy man, we have divided the visits into zones, namely the North, South, East and West. He will visit a few camps in each zone," said Abdul Hadi.

Dr Faiz said he was looking forward to the visits."I believe I can build a bond with the trainees by joining in their activities. Once a bond has been established, it would be easier for me to talk to them and get the message across," said Dr Faiz.

Results of angkasawan's experiments in space expected next month

Angkasawan Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Sheikh Mustapha said the specimens had been sent to Japan.

“We are now awaiting the results from there,” he said at the opening ceremony of Universiti Tun Abdul Rahman (UNITAR)’s 10th Anniversary Fiesta.

In a spirited speech on his experience in space, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar urged the young to be more involved in the field of science and technology and to strive for their dreams.

“I congratulate UNITAR on their growing success for the past 10 years and I hope that in the following years, they will prove to be the best in Malaysia,” he said.

UNITAR president and vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Mohamad Zabid Abdul Rashid said the university hoped to offer courses on astronomy in the future.

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar’s arrival at the opening ceremony was greeted with cheers from the crowd despite the pouring rain. He also presented 500 copies of his autobiography, Reaching for the Stars, to 10 selected secondary schools at the ceremony. The books were sponsored by UNITAR.

Reaching for the Stars was penned by Dr Sheikh Muszaphar’s late brother, Sheikh Mustapha Shukor Al-Masrie.

The two-day fiesta, which ends today, showcases an array of activities from beauty and grooming workshops to seminars and talks by industry experts in tourism.

Sheikh Muszaphar raring for a shot at Mars exploration

Astronaut Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Sheikh Mustapha is raring to go on another space mission — and he has his eyes set on joining a two-year exploration to Mars.

"I don't mind even if it's a one-way ticket," he said in a special session with Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) staff and students at its campus here today.

Some might think that he was joking but Dr Sheikh Muszaphar stressed that as an astronaut, he had to be ready for the worst as anything could happen in outer space.

He said the Russians were planning to send a manned spacecraft to the Red Planet.

It was reported that the launch date would be between 2016 and 2020 and the Mars probe would carry a crew of four to five cosmonauts. Russia has already extended an invitation to Malaysia to take part in the training programme where six volunteers would be selected from the international space community.

The selected candidates will live and work in a special complex for between 500 and 700 days, communicating with the outside world only via e-mail. The distance from Mars — which is the fourth planet from the sun — ranges between 55.7 million to 401.3 million kilometres from Earth, depending on the position of both planets in orbit to the sun. The astronauts will have to endure a 250-day journey to reach the planet from Earth.

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar told the packed lecture hall that Malaysia should continue to promote space exploration as it had been proven to spur the younger generations to excel in their studies, especially in science and mathematics.

KUALA LUMPUR: When Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Sheikh Mustapha successfully docked at the International Space Station last year, he was not merely fulfilling one man's dream.

Malaysia's first angkasawan was also realising the nation's aspirations to venture into the last frontier, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said.

Paraphrasing the first man on the moon, Neil Armstrong, Najib said: "Let no one belittle or deny this achievement. It may be a small step for Dr Sheikh Muszaphar, but for Malaysia, as a nation, it is giant leap forward."

Najib said this at the book launch of Reaching for the Stars, written by Dr Sheikh Muszaphar's younger brother, Sheikh Mustapha Shukor Al-Masrie, who died last year.

The book not only provides a personal account of the bond between the brothers, it also chronicles the angkasawan's journey from the time he was short-listed, trained, selected, and subsequently made his historic trip to space.

Mustapha, or "Ajil", 32, died without regaining consciousness after knocking into a pillar outside a restaurant in Jalan Klang Lama here on Oct 26.

Najib said the government's decision to send a Malaysian to space was a right one, as it had captured the imagination of those who dared to dream.

To underline this fact, Najib pointed out that before Dr Sheikh Muszaphar's space odyssey, almost all of the students who received awards from him would normally list, among others, medicine, engineering and law as the profession that they would most like to venture into. "

But not anymore. Now, many would say that they are aiming to be an angkasawan."

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar said his brother's death was a tragic moment for the family, more so for him personally as it happened just hours before he was due to return to Earth."

Among the five (siblings), the two of us shared this unbreakable bond since we were young. Today (the book launch) is not about me, it is about my brother."

His father, Datuk Sheikh Mustapha Syed Shukor, in his speech, spoke about how he had trained his five boys to face the hard knocks in life. "

Words cannot describe the feelings of a father who had experienced a joyous occasion and a tragic moment, both at the same time."

In Reaching for the Stars, Sheikh Mustapha wrote about his perspective on his brother's journey to space in the first part of the book.

The second part is a tribute to the author himself from his parents, his wife and four brothers.

MOSTI to retain policies under new minister

The new Science, Technology and Innovation minister has promised that old policies will stay. Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili said he will be meeting department heads over the next month to keep track of the progress of ongoing programmes and those in the pipeline.

"Only then can we think about new initiatives that need to be carried out to stir the people's interest in science and technology," he said at a handing-over-of-duties ceremony at his ministry here, formally taking over from former minister Datuk Seri Dr Jamaluddin Jarjis. Also present was newly-appointed deputy minister Fadillah Yusof.

On the top of Ongkili's agenda is the need to dispel the notion among some that science and technology was only for the elite and those trained in the fields.

On plans to send Mej. Dr Mohd Faiz Khaleed to the international space station (ISS) in 2011, he said it would go on as planned.

He said the Malaysian Space Programme would also have value-added factors to increase public awareness of advancements in science and technology.
“All programmes under the Ministry would be value-added so that the importance of science and technology will reach rural folk,” he said.

Mazlan: Young must carry space dream

GEORGE TOWN: Professor Datuk Dr Mazlan Othman wants the younger generation to continue to develop the field of space science.

She received an honorary doctorate in science at Universiti Sains Malaysia's (USM) 37th convocation ceremony yesterday.

Mazlan said her dream, going back 25 years, of Malaysia becoming a respected country in space science was bearing fruit.

"I have moved on to the international stage at the United Nations, and now the task of developing space science in the country must be continued by the younger generation," she said after receiving her award from USM Chancellor Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin.

Present were the Raja Perempuan Perlis Tuanku Fauziah, Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas and his consort Toh Puan Majimor Shariff and USM Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dzulkifli Abdul Razak.
A total of 738 graduates received their degrees. Some 331 received postgraduate degrees, 358 first degrees and 58 diplomas were awarded in the first of two convocations to be held at USM this year.

Mazlan said knowledge and a strong will to succeed were vital to ensure that one's dream came true.

She said one of her sweetest successes was helping Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Sheikh Mustapha realise his dream to go into space.

"The younger generation should have confidence and courage to delve into whatever field they want to."

Mazlan said she hoped more Malaysian scientists would explore space.

"I would also like to congratulate Dr Sheikh Muszaphar who received the Anugerah Kencana Canselor in recognition of being the first Malaysian in space."

Earlier, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin said the graduates should play their role in helping society because they were the agents of change and development.

SPACE, according to our 35-year-old astronaut Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, is magical and spectacular.

“Each time I look out and see Earth way down below, I get goosebumps. Earth is so small, yet people fight and kill.”

A sad smile formed on that well-known face.

“I could also see Earth’s pollution from space.”
An orthopedic surgeon by training, Muszaphar still practises so as not to lose touch with his training.

“It is a little tricky, what with my commitment to MOSTI (Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation) and the National Space Agency,” he said. I met him at a book store and he was in a dark Mao-collared jacket and pants.

He was there to talk about the book his younger brother, Sheikh Mustapha Shukor (fondly known as Ajil), wrote before his fateful death on Oct 27 last year after a fall. The book is called Reaching for The Stars.

“He must have started it (the book) around the time I first left for Russia, in October of 2006. I had no idea he was writing it. After his death, we found a soft copy of the manuscript on his laptop in his bedroom,” said Muszaphar, a twinge of pain crossing his face.

The book is about Muszaphar’s journey in becoming an astronaut. It chronicled him being shortlisted, trained, chosen and finally, Ajil’s point of view of his brother’s take-off, journey to and return from space.

Alas, Ajil never got to ask the question at the end of the book about praying in space. He died just five days after his older brother landed back on Earth.

Ajil, the fourth of five siblings, was three years younger than Muszaphar.

Although all five brothers are close, Muszaphar and Ajil really bonded when they went to India to study medicine.

“We were there for close to three years,” recalled Muszaphar.

“While there (in India), the struggle with studies and life in general brought us closer. He (Ajil) would do anything for me,” Muszaphar said.

Ajil’s two young children have a father figure in Muszaphar.

“I will take care of them (the children). The sales from this book goes into their tertiary education fund.”

Muszaphar added: “I never knew or even guessed just how much Ajil looked up to me.”

The realisation came when he saw in Ajil’s room the four walls filled with clippings, photos and news about Muszaphar.

The book is testament to Ajil’s admiration for all that his older brother had actualised.

“I wished I had the chance to tell him that I couldn’t have done it without his faith in my abilities. That we did it all together.” he said.

In many ways, all Muszaphar wanted was to make a difference.

“Especially with children through education. They’ve always been my focus. My having been in space makes the idea of going there somewhat accessible to them. It is not just something to dream about any longer.”

Any thought of stepping into the political arena?

“Funny thing is, I am reading a lot about politics right now. I have an incredible interest in it. To answer your question, well, if it is a way to make a change and create a better place for children, then why not?”

What happens now? What is next for Muszaphar?

He has been launched into space, has handled medical disorders of the human skeletal system and, in his younger years, appeared in numerous television commercials.

“I have two other passions,” he replied slowly, with a shy smile. “I’d like to be a pilot by 2013.”

Why 2013? “Because that is the deadline I have given myself. It can’t be earlier, what with all that is happening currently in my life.”

What’s his second passion?

“To work as a doctor in Africa.”

Dr Faiz a role model for NS trainees

PEKAN: Mej Dr Faiz Khaleed, who will become the nation's second astronaut, has been designated a role model for National Service trainees.

The "NS icon" will tour training camps to provide motivational talks and relate his experiences as a participant in the Angkasawan Programme.

His appointment was announced by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak at a gathering of about 3,000 NS trainees from various camps here.

Najib said Dr Faiz's experiences in the space programme could inspire them to achieve their dreams.

"Faiz has proved that being disciplined, focused and committed can enable anyone to achieve things previously thought impossible."

Najib said the government was in the process of finalising negotiations with the Russian government for a second space mission.

He said the mission, which could take place in 2010 or 2011, would enable Dr Faiz to become the country's second angkasawan.

The 27-year-old Armed Forces dentist was honoured to be appointed a role model for NS trainees.

"I am very excited and hope to start work at NS camps soon."

PEKAN: "If joining politics is a way of making this world a better place, then I will never hesitate to be part of it," said Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Sheikh Mustapha.

The country's first angkasawan, who is now a crowd favourite, however, feels it is still too early for him to make any plans to venture into politics.

"I am going round to share my knowledge and experience from the angkasawan space programme."

Sheikh Muszaphar was at a meet-the-people session at the DRB Hicom plant here yesterday as part of his road tour. It was attended by students of four schools in this district and workers of the plant.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak also made a stopover at the function while campaigning in the area. Najib is seeking re-election in Pekan.

The Selangor-born astronaut said he tried to avoid talking about politics while on his road tour despite the current election fever.

"I love all the attention that I get from people as, wherever I go, they would come up to me for an autograph, picture or a simple chat on my experience at space.

"During my visits to the rural areas, many villagers and young children approach me. When I see the glow in their eyes, I am inspired.

"It gives me pleasure when 5-year-olds tell me they, too, want to go to space."

Ever been keen on an outer space outing? FRANCIS DASS writes where that wish is almost a reality.

The Blast Zone gives visitors a firsthand experience of a space shuttle lift-off.

THE country is still in the grips of space fever, ever since astronaut Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor spent 10 days and 21 hours in space as the first Malaysian out there in October.

Taking the public interest in space exploration further is the Malaysia International Space Adventure (Misa) exhibition. It is on at Precinct 5 in Putrajaya until March 16.

The exhibition is expected to draw around 10,000 visitors each day, says Jamilah Itam, Misa project director.

Misa is jointly organised by Ad Suria Sdn Bhd and the Ministry of Tourism Malaysia.
Set in large white tents on an area measuring about 28,000 square metres, the Misa exhibition comprises eight interconnected zones that enable both children and adults to experience the following activities/themes: Galactic Concourse; History of Space Exploration; Magic Planet; Mars Rover; Space Station Interactive; Space Shuttle Flight Deck; Blast Zone and 4D Theatre.

“We anticipate the most popular attractions will be the Blast Zone and the 4D Theatre,” said Jamilah.

Her sentiments were echoed by Luxembourg-based Jeroen Nijpels, who is in town to offer his consulting services to Misa.

“The Blast Zone is a simulation attraction from Houston Space Centre’s visitor centre in the United States,” Nijpels said.

Nijpels is from a Luxembourg company called JN Entertainment & Leisure Consultancy.

At the Blast Zone, visitors can get the feeling of being at close proximity to a blast off (minus the heat, of course!) and they will also get explanations about the jet fuel used in space shuttles and the types of engines used in space flights.

The 4D theatre will feature a 3D Belgian computer-animated film called Fly Me To The Moon, complete with 3D glasses and seats that play a big role in enhancing the effects of the film.

“4D takes 3D to the next level. The seats move, there will be air blasts, leg ticklers, wind, smoke and light effects to enhance the effects of the 13-minute-long film. The theatre accommodates 96 people at a time,” he said.

Also of interest to visitors is an 1:18 scale model replica of the International Space Station in the Space Station Interactive zone.

The Magic Planet zone is a darkened room where images from outer space will be projected.

There is a sense of being in space; the Mars Rover zone features remote-controlled models of the Mars Rover which Nasa launched to explore the Martian landscape.

Jamilah said two men in astronaut suits will walk around and mingle with visitors.

There are food and beverage outlets and performances by an Australian arts troupe called Strange Fruit. Note that Strange Fruit will only be performing until tomorrow.

Tickets to Misa are now being sold at Eye on Malaysia in Taman Tasik Titiwangsa in Kuala Lumpur as well as in Alamanda, the shopping centre in Putrajaya. There are also on-site sales of tickets at Misa’s venue in Putrajaya’s Precinct 5.

Rahim's song for the angkasawan

Touched by the determination and victory of Malaysia’s first spaceman, composer Rahim Othman penned an inspiration song. He tells SHARMILA BILLOT about the reasons behind the move.

MALAYSIA recently made history by sending a Malaysian to space.

The country’s first angkasawan, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor touched many with his determination and victory.

Among those inspired was composer Rahim Othman who penned down an inspirational song titled Angkasawan (Impian Menjadi Kenyataan).

“The idea occurred to me when I saw him depart from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan to the International Space Station using the Soyuz TMA space craft,” said Rahim.
“It was a very touching moment but I also admired his guts.

“That was when I decided to compose a song about our first angkasawan so that the euphoria of his success will not die down.

“I roughly had the music in mind but had some difficulty with the lyrics. I took 10 days to finish it.

“The idea is to motivate Malaysians of our success story in space,” added Rahim.

Angkasawan is special since Rahim has not composed for a decade.

“It’s a comeback song for me and I’m glad it’s something meaningful,” he said.

The song will be sung by newcomer Zainal Hisham Shaari.

Rahim is looking for a partner or sponsor to launch his single. He is also discussing his song with the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry for partnership projects.

FOR all the praises and criticisms that the angkasawan programme has garnered, there is no denying the impact that it has had on young minds.

Children from as young as three have started dreaming of going to space while older students are now considering the possibility of doing space exploration studies (see H16).

Child psychologist Associate Professor Dr Khaidzir Ismail from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia sees the programme as a positive one, considering the effect it has had on children.

"The best time to expose children to things would be when they are about seven to 10.
"This is the time that they are forming their sense of self and when they are looking for heroes," he says.

Angksawan Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor represents many possibilities for children -- something they can grow up to become, someone whose traits they admire, or realising different applications of science.

Khaidzir says that investing in the angkasawan programme can be seen as investing in the future of the country.

After all, he adds, spending billions on building first world infrastructure would be a waste if the mindset of the people is still third world.

"I really hope that the angkasawan would be able to go to schools, from preschools to secondary, to talk to children and encourage them," he says.

There needs to be a paradigm shift in the way that we think and learn, and children have to be taught how to think for themselves.

We do not need an overhaul in what we learn but perhaps a tweak in the way we learn it.

For example, schools could organise a "science week", where they make learning of the subject interactive and fun.

Parents have a role in encouraging their children to work towards their dreams, and not just focus on the glory of being an astronaut.

Younger children are more open to new ideas than teenagers, who are more critical and questioning.

The latter should not be disregarded as being negative but rather as using their thinking skills to articulate their arguments and should be met with straight answers.

"We have the potential to be up there with more developed nations and this is something that the children must see," Khaidzir says.

SK Bukit Damansara co-curriculum coordinator Siti Zaini Idris agrees that the programme has had a positive impact on students, especially those learning science.

Though children in lower primary already learn about space and astronauts, there is nothing like having live contact with one in space.

Twenty students, aged seven to 12, were given the chance to speak to Dr Sheikh Muszaphar while he was in the International Space Station.

The fact that they were in the only primary school among four schools is indicative of the level of interest.

Siti Zaini notes that recent students' tuckshop conversations revolved around the latest happenings of the angkasawan and that many also have paper clippings and scrapbooks to start their space dreams.

Due to popular demand from students, Siti Zaini plans to set up an astronomy club next year.

Zuhairah Ali, executive director of Taman Pendidikan Raihan in Petaling Jaya observes that younger children are more open to the idea of becoming astronauts than older ones.

"It could be that by the time they are older, they are more critical of the possibilities of becoming an angkasawan," she says.

"To me, there is no limit -- this programme has opened doors to another area of science and it has also given children a role model in Dr Sheikh Muszaphar."

You have to instil in them the idea that many things are possible, she adds.

KOTA BHARU 26 Jan. – Hasil eksperimen yang dijalankan oleh angkasawan negara, Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Sheikh Mustapha di Stesen Angkasa Antarabangsa (ISS) akan diterbitkan dalam jurnal antarabangsa.

Sheikh Muszaphar berkata, pada masa ini perkembangan semua eksperimen itu amat memuaskan dengan sel-sel kajian berkembang dengan baik dan hasilnya akan diperoleh dalam tempoh dua bulan.

“Kita telah mengadakan perbincangan dengan pakar dan saintis seperti dari Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia dan Universiti Teknologi Mara, hasilnya akan dikongsi seluruh dunia,” katanya.

Beliau berkata demikian kepada pemberita selepas Majlis Amanat Menteri Pengajian Tinggi, Datuk Mustapa Mohamed Kepada Pelajar IPT di Kelantan dan Majlis Bersama Angkasawan Negara di sini hari ini.

Eksperimen yang dijalankan angkasawan negara melibatkan tiga komponen penting iaitu sel di angkasa, mikrob di angkasa dan penghabluran protein.

Menggunakan sepenuhnya kelebihan mikrograviti dan ruang radiasi di angkasa, penyelidikan juga akan memberikan satu bentuk keputusan yang sangat hampir kepada biologi sebenar sel, mikrob dan protein yang dikaji.

Sementara itu, majlis “Pengalaman Saya di Angkasa Lepas’ bersama Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar itu mendapat sambutan hangat apabila hampir 3,000 pelajar IPT memenuhi dewan sebuah hotel di sini bagi mendengar sendiri pengalaman beliau.

Sesi selama dua jam itu dibahagikan kepada dua segmen iaitu Sheikh Muszaphar berkongsi pengalamannya dan sesi soal jawab dengan lebih 30 wakil pelajar mengemukakan pelbagai soalan seperti hasil eksperimen sains dan pengalaman beribadat di angkasa lepas.

We need scientific minds as role models for youth

UNIVERSITI Sains Malaysia started the New Year with a bang, when our angkasawan negara descended on the campus on Jan 5. Like the space launch itself, it was a historic moment not only for USM.

About 5,000 came out in support, including about 1,500 following the event in lecture halls through close-circuit television cameras.

The face-to-face encounter with Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor (SMS, for short) proved an encounter of a lifetime. For almost 11/2 hours, they were mesmerised by the detailed experiences that Dr Muszaphar shared with them, beginning with his childhood ambition to venture into space 25 years ago up to his tumultuous entry back to Earth.

Most intriguing was his version of what life in space is, something unimaginable to most people.

How did he sleep? Eat? Exercise? Answer the call of nature? How did he feel when he saw Mother Earth from space for the first time? What about the experiments he had to conduct? What were the results?
These were among the barrage of questions Dr Muszaphar had to field from students. All questions were handled with humility and, at times, a sense of humour.

Not a single one was left unanswered or put aside because it was considered trivial, including one about what the “smell” of the International Space Station (ISS). It was this that made Dr Muszaphar the hero of the day!

He was literally swarmed by the audience when he inched his way out after the event, while posing for photographs, giving autographs and even friendly advice.

Despite having hosted Nobel Laureates, celebrities and glamorous figures previously, none could match the hero’s welcome accorded to the angkasawan negara by the campus.

More interestingly, it indicated a promising future for science in particular and knowledge in general for the up and coming generation. The long-held belief that the youngsters of today are disinterested in science was for once challenged.

Thus far, there has been a dearth of activities “exposing” successful intellectual Malaysian figures. At least not the level of publicity entertainers are given. New starlets are being introduced to the public by the media frequently. But not so people like Dr Muszaphar.

Should he did not have made it as the country’s first astronaut, chances are he may have remained little known despite his very interesting experiences and achievements.

Not many know that he has spent time in Afghanistan and Cambodia. Or that he is a part-time model and co-owner of a restaurant.In short, he has diverse and vibrant interests, unlike what is happening today where many students have no time for anything else. Or discouraged to do anything else.

In fact, the person whom Dr Muszaphar regards as his mentor, Professor Datuk Mazlan Othman, should have been made better known as an intellectual icon for young aspiring science students.

We must also remember the “backroom boys” responsible for making the space programme an astounding success. They are the unsung scientific heroes who we have conveniently forgotten, believing they will not inspire others.

USM’s experience with Dr Muszaphar has categorically disproved this perception. Instead, much needs to be done to meet the demands of the inquisitive minds of young Malaysians.

Our responsibility is to give them the space and opportunities to not only find the right answers but, more importantly, ask the right questions. Only in this way can new discoveries be made and a truly knowledge-based society created.

In a nutshell, the empire of the future is the empire of the mind — a great one at that.

To Dr Sheikh Muszaphar and the like, their task remains a tremendous, if not a challenging one. One of most recent examples one must keep in mind is none other than Dr Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, India’s 11th president from 2002 until July last year.

A versatile person, he played a leading role in the development of India’s missile programmes (see http://www.indianmuslims.info/book/export/html/12). Despite this and having held the country’s highest office, he chose to humbly do what he loves most — engage with students and teach. He is now involved in various programmes like Youth Movement for Developed India 2020.

Like Malaysia, Dr Kalam wants to transform India into a developed nation by 2020 as professed in his book Ignited Minds: Unleashing the Power Within India (2003). We can get no better example than this to emulate.

And through Dr Sheikh Muszaphar we see such a future in the making, God willing!

Astronaut gets award

SEREMBAN: Malaysia's first astronaut, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Sheikh Mustapha, was chosen as the Tokoh Maal Hijrah 1429 for Negri Sembilan.

He received the award from the Yang di-Pertuan Besar Tuanku Ja'afar Tuanku Abdul Rahman at the state level Maal Hijrah celebration yesterday."I feel honoured that the state government has decided to give me the award. I would like to express my gratitude to the state government for the honour," said Dr Sheikh Muszaphar who received a RM5,000 prize, a certificate and an Umrah package.

Also present at the ceremony were the Tuanku Ampuan Negri Sembilan Tuanku Najihah and Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.Dr Sheikh Muszaphar said he would continue with his efforts to meet the nation's youths in order to inspire them to be interested in science and astronomy.

"The space programme showed that we can compete in the global platform. In the meetings that I have had with our youth, a lot of them have voiced their interest to be involved in science and technology."

His parents, Datuk Sheikh Mustapha Abdul Shukor and Datin Zuraida Sheikh Ahmad, were also present at the event.

The state government also presented a special award to Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia physics professor, Dr Roslan Abd Shukor. He received a RM5,000 prize and a robe.Roslan is a Fellow of London's Institute of Physics since 2004 and a Fellow of the Malaysian Science Academy since last year.

He also sits on the advisory board of the Superconductor Science and Technology, a journal published by the Institute of Physics.

Astronaut to publish brother's book

GEORGE TOWN: Malaysia's first astronaut, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Sheikh Mustapha, was hoping to write a book about his space adventures.

But, unbeknown to him, his late brother, Sheikh Mustafa Shukor Al Masrie, had beaten him to it. Sheikh Mustafa, who died on Oct 27 last year after a fall, had written a book on his brother becoming an astronaut.

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar now plans to publish the book as a tribute to Sheikh Mustafa.

"I would like to do this as a tribute to my brother and that is why his book is coming out first," Dr Sheikh Muszaphar said at a press conference yesterday, adding that the book would be launched next month.He said it was his brother who had encouraged him to become an astronaut.

His own book, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar said, would be launched in July and would revolve around the training he went through and his experiences.

He had earlier attended a forum organised by Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) where he shared his experiences during his 12-day mission on the International Space Station (ISS).

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar, who was greeted by a 3,000-strong crowd when he entered the Dewan Tuanku Syed Putra, held the attention of all present with anecdotes of his life and the time he spent in space.

He said there was an "open house" during Hari Raya Aidilfitri where all the crew aboard the ISS gathered and shared food."I also brought some Hari Raya music like Seribu Bintang by the Alleycats and Balik Kampung by Sudirman to share with the other astronauts," he said.

During the question-and-answer session, he was queried on a variety of topics ranging from how he coped with going to toilet in space to more serious ones like his thoughts on Malaysia's decision to buy the Soyuz rocket.Dr Sheikh Muszaphar urged students to take up aerospace-related fields of study so that Malaysia could build its own rocket by 2020.

"We have to start somewhere and I am confident that with many experts in the field we can have our own rocket by 2020."

Meanwhile, USM vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dzulkifli Abdul Razak said there was a need to nurture more intellectuals and scientists as role models.

"I never get such a crowd when a scientist comes to USM. We need more people like Dr Sheikh Muszaphar if we want to go to space and to the next level."

Malaysian-made rockets in 15 years

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians building their own satellite or rocket in their garage?

This will be possible in the future as the National Space Agency is intensifying efforts to develop its capacity in satellite technology and teaching the skills to youths.

"It can happen if people at that time reach a certain level of technical expertise as well as have a desire to do something different," said its director-general Datuk Dr Mazlan Othman in a public lecture at the Academy of Sciences Malaysia yesterday.

The way to achieve that level, she said, was to expose schoolchildren and university students to satellite and rocket-building.

"Hopefully, in the next 15 to 20 years, the idea will not be so alien to them, as they would have touched or even built a satellite while studying," she said.

The National Space Agency has started going to schools and universities to raise awareness and to help develop certain skills among the children and undergraduates.

Mazlan added that it was not difficult to build satellites. "Only the sophisticated satellite needs to be built in a sophisticated place." She said the agency planned to develop a centre to build satellites locally.

"We must provide jobs for the best brains in Malaysia to stay in the country so as to create a 'brain retention' of these space experts," she said.

Also present at the public lecture, which was entitled "Space: Its Value Proposition for Malaysian Security, Enterprise and Science", were Malaysia's first astronaut Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Sheikh Mustapha and Academy of Sciences of Malaysia honorary treasurer Datuk Ahmad Zaidee Laidin.

HE has conquered space. Now he dreams of conquering the skies.

Malaysia's first astronaut Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor wants to be a pilot next after an "amazing" ride on a Red Arrows aircraft.He was invited to be a part of the world-renowned aerobatic team's aerial display during the opening show of the aerospace segment of the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace (Lima) 2007 exhibition yesterday.

"I was in the air for 35 minutes and the pilot even allowed me to take the controls for about five minutes. "We were going at such high speeds. It was an amazing experience," he said.

Muszaphar is planning to take his pilot's licence in five years' time.The affable 35-year-old said he had the greatest respect for pilots as flying was "not an easy task".Muszaphar's other dream is to treat sick children in Africa. He has always wanted to do as many things as possible in life.

"Once you try something, you realise that you want to do more of it. That is why I encourage all Malaysians to diversify, move out of your comfort zones and explore new things in life. Always push yourself to the limit."

Muszaphar will be at the National Space Programme booth in Lima until Saturday for meet-the-fans and autograph-signing sessions.

These were some of the questions posed to Malaysia's first astronaut Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor by a group of preschool children from Tadika Taman Pendidikan Raihan Petaling Jaya.

The queries were included with pictures in a colourful booklet that the children made as part of their activities this year, in line with their theme of learning - space.

This booklet was presented to the parents of the angkasawan to be taken to their son in Russia before his launch.

Pupils spoke candidly on their views about space; original thinking and imagination being encouraged at the school.
Teuku Meurah Irfan Teuku Meurah Indra Mahlia, 6, wants to be an astronaut so he can see the stars up close and meet aliens.

Wan Khadijah Ahmad Shriffuddin, 4, says she would like to see Saturn and shooting stars, as well as aliens.

"There are aliens on the moon - I saw them in a book," she adds.

Natasha Abdul Rahman, 4, thinks it's possible to reach the sun but does not think there are aliens in space.

Ryan Fahd Huesen Zamanhuri, 6, who is more interested in seeing the planets, states that "Mecury and Venus don't have moons but the other planets do".

Ryhan Elmyra Huesen Zamanhuri, 4, who posed the question "what's the colour of stars?" in the booklet, thinks they are yellow and small.

"I would like to be an astronaut because I want to see what space is like," she says. Which sums up her friends' desire for venturing into space.

Not selected but duo still brimming with hope

KUALA LUMPUR: Although Va-najah Siva was not chosen to be the first Malaysian in space, she still hopes that one day she will be the first Malaysian woman astronaut.

As one of the final four who were selected as potential astronaut candidates, Vanajah was devastated when she was told that she would not be in the final two.

"I knew that my gender was not a factor with regard to the results, but I was devastated, nevertheless," she said.

Asked if she would sign up for a second space trip in the future, Vanajah said she would jump at the opportunity anytime .

"Without a blink and no second thoughts about it. Just show me where to sign."
However, she makes it clear that being an astronaut for her is more than "girl power".

"A chance to travel to outer space as a contribution to the development of my country and the betterment of the human race is not just a competition, it's a dream."

Despite being the only woman, Vanajah said she bonded well with the other three male candidates.

She became good friends with one of them, Capt Mohammed Faiz Kamaludin, a pilot with Malaysia Airlines.

Like Vanajah, Faiz said that just because he was not chosen to be the final two astronaut candidates, it did not mean that his day would never come.

"If Malaysia decides to put a man on a second space mission, count me in. I'll sign up at the drop of a hat," said the 35-year-old.

Vanajah and Faiz both said they had full confidence in Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor and his backup Capt Dr Faiz Khaleed.

"Looking back now, it was quite clear who would be chosen.

"The decision was written in the stars and Muszaphar was destined to be the first Malaysian astronaut," said Faiz

He was also present on site to watch the launch and lend his moral support to Muszaphar.

"Muszaphar is an excellent candidate and will make an excellent first astronaut for Malaysia.

"It was a good decision but I believe any one of the two boys would had been a good choice."

Faiz hopes that putting a Malaysian in space, besides proving the "Malaysia Boleh" spirit, would also help further the development of science and technology in the country.

"I hope it will inspire an interest in science among the youths and draw more of them to study aerospace engineering."

Although they did not make the final cut, both Faiz and Vanajah admit that the experience of being considered for the role of being Malaysia's first astronaut is something they would cherish for the rest of their lives.

"Since the selection, I've been receiving numerous invitations to speak at schools, clubs and various organisations.

"It has given me a wonderful chance to motivate girls in our country and boost the confidence of women in Malaysia as well," said Vanajah

She is pursuing a master's degree at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden.

LANGKAWI: Malaysia's first astronaut Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Sheikh Mustapha will not be giving up his job as an orthopaedic surgeon despite his newly acquired status as an astronaut.

On the contrary, he said, he would carry out his duties simultaneously -- as a space speaker and researcher, and orthopaedic surgeon and lecturer.

"I will not give up my job as an orthopaedic surgeon although I have a duty as an astronaut," he said here today.

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar, 35, is manning the Astronaut Gallery at the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) booth at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace (Lima) 2007 exhibition which began here yesterday.

He created history when he blasted off to the International Space Station (ISS) from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan in Russia's Soyuz TMA-11 on Nov 10 and came back to earth 11 days later.
Dr Sheikh Muszaphar said he was now under a one-year contract with MOSTI until the end of 2008, after which he would return to his job at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) as an orthopaedic surgeon and lecturer.

He, however, also hoped to lead a space research team.

"I want to conduct an international-level study for the benefit of mankind when I go back to UKM and to forge cooperation with space researchers from throughout the world.

"I'm eager to start my duty as MOSTI speaker in January to share my space experience with university and school students. I wish it will begin sooner," he said.

He revealed that former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who visited the Astronaut Gallery for 15 minutes, had also asked him about his plan.

"Dr Mahathir and his wife (Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali) hoped that I would help Malaysians through the talks organised by MOSTI," he said, adding that the former prime minister asked him to be diligent in his work, look after himself and safeguard the name of the country.

"Dr Mahathir said he was proud of me and hoped I would be able to change the people's mindset now that the country has its own astronauts," he said.

Dr Muszaphar said Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Nur Zahirah also visited the Astronaut Gallery.

Chance to experience 'space adventure'

Malaysia is out to woo more visitors to the country by taking them to where no layman has gone before - space. The latest tourism offering is the Malaysia International Space Adventure (MISA) which will be held till March 16.

Held in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year, it is the first-ever aerospace exhibition in Malaysia with real National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) exhibits shipped in for display.

MISA is located in Precinct 5, Putrajaya, near the Putrajaya International Convention Centre.

Opening hours from Monday to Thursday are from 10am until the last entry at 9pm, and on Friday and Saturday from 10am to the last entry at 10pm.

Admission is RM38 for adult and RM23 child.
The exhibition's theme is "Experience Space on Earth" and showcases, among others, a replica of the 'Discovery' space shuttle flight deck, lunar rover robots and an interactive experience inside a replica of the International Space Station.

It also provides a blast zone where visitors experience the final moments before a spacecraft launch and a four- dimensional (4-D) theatre showing a movie of the first space travel to the moon on board the Apollo 11.

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor launched the exhibition here last night.

"The exhibition is the perfect education field trip for schools. I hope it will spark the inspiration and motivation for Malaysia's next generation of astronauts, aeronautical engineers and scientists, in line with the country's goal of becoming a developed nation with a strong base of knowledge workers," he said.

KUALA LUMPUR 26 Nov. – Angkasawan negara, Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Sheikh Mustapha hari ini berharap dapat mengikat tali pertunangan dengan pilihan hatinya tidak lama lagi.

Meskipun enggan mengesahkan hubungannya dengan Dr. Halina Mohd. Yunos yang mencuri tumpuan media apabila mendampinginya Sabtu lalu, beliau memberitahu, hubungan mereka belum memasuki alam pertunangan.

Namun, apabila ditanya sama ada beliau akan mengikat tali pertunangan tidak lama lagi, Sheikh Muszaphar berkata:‘‘Tidak lama lagi, saya harap.’’

Beliau berkata demikian pada sidang akhbar penganjuran Pengembaraan Angkasa Lepas Antarabangsa Malaysia (MISA) di restoran miliknya, Rebung, di sini hari ini.

Ahad lalu, akhbar menyiarkan gambar dan identiti gadis pilihan Sheikh Muszaphar, 35, yang menemaninya ke majlis mesra Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) bersama media di sini.

Halina, 27, seorang doktor perubatan dalam bidang kecantikan (estetik) di PrimaNora Women’s Wellness Centre, mula berkenalan dengan Sheikh Muszaphar semasa menuntut di UKM, lima tahun lalu.

Kedua-duanya bagaimanapun enggan mengesahkan hubungan mereka sebagai kekasih meskipun Sheikh Muszaphar menyatakan mahu menamatkan zaman bujangnya pada tahun 2009.

Semalam, bapa kepada Sheikh Muszaphar, Datuk Sheikh Mustapha menjawab persoalan itu dengan mengesahkan hubungan mereka sebagai kekasih dan mengakui Halina bakal menantunya.

Apabila ditanya mengenai perkara itu, Sheikh Muszaphar berkata, beliau tidak mahu mengulas lanjut.

Ditanya berkali-kali mengenai butiran hubungannya dengan Halina, beliau tetap dengan pendirian mahu kehidupan peribadinya diasingkan dan enggan menjawab tapi hanya tersenyum.

Beliau turut memberitahu, media lebih gemar menyoalnya berhubung hubungan peribadinya berbanding eksperimen yang dilakukannya semasa berada di Stesen Angkasa Lepas Antarabangsa (ISS) bulan lalu.

Sheikh Muszaphar: I hope to be married by 2009

KUALA LUMPUR: Angkasawan Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor plans to end his bachelorhood by 2009.

While declaring that he would want to get married by then, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar did not say if he had any girlfriend or was seeing anyone special at the moment.

He merely smiled when the question was posed to him twice by reporters at the Parliament Lobby yesterday when he met MPs and attended the luncheon hosted by the Backbenchers Club.

Earlier, he said: “I am already 35, going on 36 and hope to be married by 2009.”

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar wants to end a two-year contract that he signed with the Government which requires him to remain single so that he could concentrate on the space programme.

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jamaludin Jarjis had said in his speech that Dr Sheikh Muszaphar wanted to end the contract earlier now that he had completed the space mission.

“We signed the contract with him last year and he has one more year to go,” he said.

Dr Jamaludin also said that the second Angkasawan Dr Faiz Khaleed, who was scheduled to go to space by 2011, would have to extend the contract requiring him to remain single.

Dr Faiz probably would have to extend it by another two years, said Dr Jamaludin.

He also revealed that Russia has offered to sell the Soyuz spacecraft, which carried Dr Sheikh Muszaphar to space, to Malaysia.

Dr Jamaludin said he was in the midst of gathering feedback from people on whether the spacecraft should be bought before presenting the proposal to the Cabinet.

He told the MPs to support the proposal and discuss the issue in the Dewan Rakyat.

“I would gather feedback first to see whether the people are for it and whether the price offered is good before making any proposal to the Cabinet,” he said.

Dr Jamaludin said the purpose of doing so would be to sustain the interest of the younger generation in space for a longer time by enabling children to have a chance to take a look at the spaceship.

Also present at the event were two scientists from the ministry, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abd Aziz and Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid, as well as the Speaker Tan Sri Ramli Ngah Talib.

Opposition MPs Teresa Kok (DAP - Seputeh) and Ismail Noh (PAS - Pasir Mas) were also present.

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar cut a cake, signed a plaque, answered questions raised by MPs, signed autographs and also posed for photos with the MPs and Parliament staff members.

Dr Jamaludin also said that a foundation would be set up for the space programme and some private sector firms had offered to support it.

The foundation would also take care of the welfare of the two Angkasawan who were regarded as national treasures, he said.

Kehadiran gadis berbaju batik hijau muda mengiringi angkasawan negara itu ke majlis pelancaran Festival Antarabangsa Batik Malaysia di Esplanade KLCC malam ini, menarik perhatian para hadirin.

Malah, seorang petugas yang melihat kelibat gadis itu memakai pakaian sedondon dengan Sheikh Muszaphar yang mengenakan baju batik berwarna hijau tua, secara spontan berkata: ‘‘Tunang angkasawan negara.’’
Pada 5 November lalu, Sheikh Muszaphar, 35, mengumumkan hasrat berkahwin sebelum 2009.

Justeru, kehadiran beliau bersama gadis berkulit cerah dan berambut ikal melebihi paras bahu itu menimbulkan pelbagai persoalan.

Gadis itu sebenarnya ialah Dr. Halina Mohd. Yunos, 27, doktor perubatan dalam bidang kecantikan (estetik) di PrimaNora Women”s Wellness Centre.

Bagaimanapun, pada majlis tersebut, beliau dan Dr. Halina duduk berasingan di tempat yang disediakan oleh pihak penganjur.

Mereka juga kelihatan jarang berbual disebabkan Sheikh Muszaphar ‘agak sibuk’ melayan tetamu yang ingin bergambar dan mendengar secara langsung pengalaman beliau berada di Stesen Angkasa Antarabangsa (ISS).

Utusan Malaysia yang dimaklumkan lebih awal akan kehadiran ‘teman istimewa’ angkasawan negara itu cuba mendapatkan reaksi dan kepastian daripada beliau.

Angkasawan's space dream intact

KUALA LUMPUR: Angkasawan Major Dr Faiz Khaleed's dream of going into space is still intact.

This follows a four-hour surgery to reattach eight tendons on his left wrist after he was slashed in an armed robbery in front of his house in Taman Mawar, Cheras, on Wednesday.

A Gleneagles Intan Medical Centre team, headed by consultant orthopaedic and trauma surgeon Datuk Dr Zulkharnain Ismail, began performing the surgery at 2pm on Wednesday, 12 hours after the attack.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who visited Dr Faiz at the medical centre yesterday, said the doctors managed to save his hand.

"He can move his fingers. He lost a lot of blood and sustained a deep wound close to the bone.
"He will be warded for a week and undergo intensive physiotherapy."

He is expected to recover fully in three months and continue with his space programme, said Najib who met Dr Faiz for 10 minutes after arriving at the medical centre at 12.55pm.

Also present during the visit were Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Jamaludin Jarjis, Dr Faiz's mother Maznah Mohamed and father Khaleed Abdullah.

Dr Zulkharnain said Dr Faiz required more than 100 stitches for the 5cm wound.

"Fortunately, there were no bone fractures.

"The injury was sustained as Dr Faiz warded off his attacker," said Dr Zulkharnain.

Meanwhile, Dr Faiz said he panicked as everything happened very quickly and suddenly during the 2am robbery.

"I can vaguely remember the face of my attacker whom I believe is an Indonesian," he said.

Recounting the robbery, Dr Faiz said he had just alighted from a Perodua Kenari when two youths on a motorcycle approached them.

"One robber brandishing a parang confronted me, while the other placed a parang to the neck of my friend in the car.

"At that instant, I feared for my friend's life and attempted to distract the robbers' attention.

"Just then, one of the robbers came for me. I responded by kicking him, prompting the second robber to throw his parang at me," said Dr Faiz.

As Dr Faiz's friend screamed for help, he activated the remote control of the gate of his house.

"This made the robbers panic as they dashed off with my friend's gold necklace.

"I could not make out the registration number of the motorcycle," he said.

Dr Faiz said he had earlier gone for supper in the city with his friend whom he had not met for eight months.

Other than the wrist wound, Dr Faiz said he sustained slight bruises to his body, while his friend was not hurt.

"I hope to recover fully soon and am eager to resume my space training programme next year," said Dr Faiz.

Space hero Faiz hurt by robber

KUALA LUMPUR: Angkasawan Maj Dr Faiz Khaleed has, over the past few months, been labelled a hero by the Malaysian public. Yesterday, he showed just what sort of a hero he really is.

Dr Faiz was slashed on his left arm when he came to the aid of a friend who was being robbed in front of his house in Taman Mawar, Cheras, at 2am. He is now recuperating at the Gleneagles Medical Centre.On seeing his friend being mugged by two men armed with parang, one of whom had the weapon to the friend's neck, Dr Faiz tried to shift their attention to himself instead. The ploy worked.Although he managed to throw a few punches and kicks at the robbers, he was slashed.It is believed that the barking of a neighbour's dog and the opening of an automatic gate caused the assailants to panic and they fled clutching only a piece of costume jewellery belonging to one of Dr Faiz's friends.

His mother, Maznah Mohamed, said her son had just returned from a late supper with a few friends when the two robbers approached him."At first, my son, who had just returned from a holiday in Zurich last Monday, thought the two men were neighbours. "He was surprised when they came near him and took out a parang each."At that juncture, the men pushed Dr Faiz aside and one of them put his parang to the friend's throat. That was when Dr Faiz acted."

Present at the medical centre were Dr Faiz's father, Khaleed Abdullah, and Angkasawan programme director Col Dr Zulkeffli Mat Jusoh. Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Jamaludin Jarjis earlier visited Dr Faiz at the hospital. Jamaludin said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had been informed about the incident. It is learnt Dr Faiz has lodged a report.

Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor (born Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Al Masrie bin Sheikh Mustapha on July 27, 1972) is a Malaysian orthopedic surgeon and is the first Malaysian to go into space. He was launched to the International Space Station aboard Soyuz TMA-11 with the Expedition 16 crew on October 10, 2007. Sheikh Muszaphar flew under an agreement with Russia through the Angkasawan program, and returned to Earth on October 21, 2007, aboard Soyuz TMA-10 with the Expedition 16 crew members, Fyodor Yurchikhin and Oleg Kotov, after nine days aboard the station.

Sheikh Muszaphar was born in Kuala Lumpur and attended high school at Maktab Rendah Sains MARA in Muar. He then earned a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, India. He is yet to receive his Masters of Surgery in Orthopaedic Surgery at University Kebangsaan Malaysia. He has deferred his studies to join the 'Angkasawan' program. Sheikh Muszaphar is a trainee orthopedic surgeon, and a university medical officer in medicine at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. In 1998, Sheikh Muszaphar worked at Hospital Seremban, followed by a move to Kuala Lumpur General Hospital in 1999, and was on staff at Hospital Selayang from 2000 through 2001. Sheikh Muszaphar is also a part-time model and businessman. This has raised some controversy in Malaysia as government doctors are not allowed to own/run private businessesses yet he part owns a restaurant and a private clinic.

Faiz bin Khaleed (born September 15, 1980 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) is a Malaysian military dentist with the Royal Malaysian Armed Forces. In September 2006, he was selected as one of two final candidates to undergo astronaut training in Star City as part of the Angkasawan program. The other candidate was Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor.

In 2007, Sheikh Muszaphar was selected to fly to the International Space Station with Expedition 16 onboard the Soyuz TMA-11 in October 2007.

Faiz bin Khaleed still might go to space in 2008 or 2009 if Malaysia decides to proceed with a second space flight.

Malaysian duo now called cosmonauts

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Angkasawan Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Sheikh Mustapha and Major Dr Faiz Khaleed have been commissioned as cosmonauts by the Russian government.

The commissioning was done by Roskosmos (Russian National Space Agency) chairman Anatoly Perminov, at Star City near Moscow, Russia, at 4pm Russian time (8pm in Malaysia) on Thursday.

Science, Technology and Innovations Ministry secretary-general Datuk Abdul Hanan Alang Endut and National Space Programme director Colonel Dr Zulkeffeli Mat Jusoh were present at the ceremony.

Dr Zulkeffeli said that the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa) through its representative at the commissioning ceremony, also recognised the duo as astronauts.

On Oct 10, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar together Russian flight engineer Yuri Malenchenko and commander Peggy Wilson from the United States took off in a Soyuz TMA11 spacecraft to the International Space Station.

Faiz gets a major promotion

CAPTAIN Dr Faiz Khaleed has been promoted to the rank of major with immediate effect. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the decision was made after discussions with Chief of Defence Forces Gen Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Zainal.

"We agreed that Dr Faiz deserves it. He has performed very well in the Angkasawan programme and has proven that he can contribute his experiences to the nation."

He said Dr Faiz would be an icon for the youth and would be speaking to students on the programme and space technology.

Dr Faiz said he was taken by surprise by the announcement.

KUALA LUMPUR : Malaysia’s first angkasawan may have completed his journey to space but for the country’s space programme, it is only the beginning of more exciting things to come.

The successful conclusion of Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor’s journey to space has shown that nothing is impossible if we believe and work for it.

What was a dream is now a reality and a legacy for future generations to build on.

The angkasawan programme began in 2003. Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had expressed the hope that he would one day see a Malaysian in space.

At that time, the notion that a Malaysian would ever reach the depths of space was too incredible to imagine.
But several years later, Dr Muszaphar has done just that.

When it was announced that he would be the first Malaysian to travel to space, an excited Dr Muszaphar had said: “I feel so lucky, I feel as though I’m living the dream of all Malaysians.”

Indeed he was. Malaysians of all ages were glued to their television sets on Oct 10, waiting with bated breath for the Soyuz TMA-10 to lift off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 9.22pm.

The nine giant screens showing the live telecast at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre attracted about 1,800 viewers.

Many more offered their prayers for a safe journey for Dr Muszaphar from their living rooms.

Spontaneous cheers rang out and every Malaysian stood a little taller when the screen showed the handsome orthopaedic surgeon in the Soyuz TMA-10.

Despite attempts to discredit Dr Muszaphar as nothing more than a space tourist, he showed that he meant business and was not a mere visitor to the International Space Station.

He conducted research on three experiments under the life sciences category.

The Cells in Space experiment, on the effects of micro-gravity and space radiation on cancer cells, would shed light on cell behaviour and tissue repair.

Another experiment, called Microbes in Space, studied the effects of micro-gravity and space radiation on bacterial growth and drug resistance.

The Protein Crystallisation in Space compared the crystallisation of proteins in space with those crystallised on Earth to develop future industrial applications.

Dr Muszaphar was required to carry out each experiment based on a rigid timetable, which he did. He spent nine days on the ISS and returned to Earth on Oct 21.

After witnessing the launch, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had said the country’s space programme would continue with the help of the Russian Space Agency.

This was echoed by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who announced on Oct 21 that the agency had offered to send another Malaysian to the ISS in 2010 or 2011.

“The next mission will be a step up from the first mission,” Najib had said, hinting at greater things for Major Dr Faiz Khaleed, the primary candidate for the next space flight.

When it was conceptualised, the angkasawan programme was meant to be a starting point to spur interest in science and technology.

The target of the programme are students, whom Abdullah had said would “ultimately realise all the dreams and aspirations we have for our nation".

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Jamaludin Jarjis echoed that in Moscow when he said: “The success of our first space mission will inspire Malaysian youth to learn more about space. It will open their minds and push them beyond limitations.”

It is time for the thousands of Malaysian children who have followed Dr Muszaphar’s progress to dream their own dreams and make them a reality.

You are heroes, Abdullah tells two angkasawan

PUTRAJAYA: "You are heroes," were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's words of welcome to spacemen Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor and Maj Dr Faiz Khaleed.

Dr Muszaphar and Dr Faiz visited Abdullah yesterday at the prime minister's office to "report" to him after arriving home in Malaysia a few days ago.

Abdullah was briefed on Dr Muszaphar's mission to the International Space Station (ISS) and on the scientific experiments he conducted there.

"I'm glad to hear the specimens were all safe as they had quite a rough landing on Earth in the Soyuz craft," Abdullah said after the meeting.

He said Dr Muszaphar had done the nation proud and had achieved a big step for Malaysia by excelling in other fields.

Abdullah reiterated that Malaysia was keen on continuing the space programme and would consider future offers to send another astronaut into space.

"Dr Faiz is just as capable and he will be involved in the next mission.

"There could also be room for Dr Muszaphar to be involved again."

The two spacemen presented Abdullah with "souvenirs" from space: the mini Quran which Dr Muszaphar took with him to the ISS, a frame containing other objects which he also brought, such as a mini Jalur Gemilang and a copy of the Rukunegara, and a black leather jacket with the Angkasawan logo and Abdullah's name stitched on it.

"You are a hero," Abdullah said while shaking Dr Muszaphar's hand.

"You are a hero, too," he said as he shook Dr Faiz's hand.

The astronauts are to meet Deputy Prime Minister Dat-uk Seri Najib Razak today at his office at the Defence Ministry.

Astronaut back for brother's funeral

PETALING JAYA: Astronaut Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor will arrive home today, not to a grand homecoming but to attend his brother's funeral.

Younger brother, Sheikh Mustapha,32, hospitalised at University Malaya Medical Centre following a fall on Sunday, died at 6pm yesterday without regaining consciousness.

Dr Muszaphar, who was calm when informed of the death in Moscow, is expected to arrive at 2pm at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

The country’s first man in space will be taken straight to the Tuan Haji Said cemetery in Seremban for the burial, scheduled after Zohor prayers today.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who visited Dr Muszaphar’s family here last night to offer his condolences, said the astronaut’s return was brought forward to allow him to attend the funeral.
“On behalf of the government, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family.”

He met Dr Muszaphar’s father, Datuk Sheikh Mustapha Abdul Shukor, and expressed hope the family would be strong during these trying times.

Najib said Dr Muszaphar’s official homecoming celebrations would be held in a few days’ time.

Mustapha, 32, a project manager, fell unconscious after knocking into a pillar outside a restaurant last Sunday in Jalan Klang Lama.

He leaves a wife, Haryati Mohd Redza, 28, and two children, aged 3 and 2.

First Malaysian in space: Computer glitch sends Soyuz 340km off target

ANGKASAWAN Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor returned to Earth safely yesterday.

After spending 11 days in space, he was the second man to come out of the Soyuz TMA-10 craft after Fyodor Yurchikhin. The third person to emerge from the capsule was Oleg Kotov.

The Soyuz landed 340km west of the designated site at 6.37pm.

Search and rescue plans were upgraded because of the ballistic entry of the Soyuz into the Earth's atmosphere.

Yurchikhin reported that the ballistic entry was triggered by onboard computers, resulting in a steeper descent and, thus, the off-course landing.
The spacecraft deviated from its intended landing spot after a problem during the descent. But it landed safely and the crew was unharmed, said Russian Mission Control spokesman Valery Lyndin.

Russian search and rescue teams quickly located the craft. One helicopter was already on the ground when the Soyuz landed. Twenty minutes after landing, the crew was extracted from the craft. The medical team, which examined the crew, reported that they were in good health.

Among those at the Mission Control Centre in Moscow keeping tabs on the Soyuz were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Science, Technology and Innovations Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jamaludin Jarjis.

High-ranking officials from the Russian Space Agency, Roscosmos, including its director, Anatoli Perminov, were also present, together with Dr Muszaphar's parents, Datuk Sheikh Mustapha Sheikh Shukor and Datin Zuraidah Sheikh Ahmad.

Najib told a press conference that he and all Malaysians were happy that Dr Muszaphar had landed safely.

"This is a very momentous and historic occasion for Malaysia. It will go down in the annals of our history because this is a first for Malaysia in space and he has returned safely.

"The entire mission will be a landmark voyage for Malaysia."

He expressed his gratitude to Perminov, Roscosmos, the Russian and Kazakhstan governments, Nasa, the European Space Agency and other organisations which supported the angkasawan project.

"We have shown that this is a good example of an international collaborative mission. This space collaboration opens up many new opportunities in the future."

He said Malaysia would undertake an in-depth study of the success of the mission, not only in terms of how the local man fared physically but also the scientific experiments carried out in space.

"There are benefits we have reaped from the mission. The tangible benefits would be ascertained from our analysis of the scientific experiments conducted and results achieved and whether they would lead to commercialisation.

"The intangible benefit is, as a nation, Malaysians feel very proud that we can stand a few inches taller now that we have had a Malaysian travel in space."

Najib said he hoped the project would inspire present and future generations to strive for greater endeavours in all fields.

Russia offers another shot at space

MOSCOW: The Russian Space Agency, Roskosmos, is offering a place for another Malaysian angkasawan to the International Space Station in late 2010 or early 2011.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the government had until the end of 2009 to accept the offer.

"Roskosmos president Anatoli Perminov told me they were willing to train our second angkasawan for the next mission.

"This time, it will not be an offset arrangement but directly financed," he said at the Mission Control Centre here yesterday.

"Roskosmos has agreed to be a part of our civil space expedition, which we hope to seal under an agreement which will encompass all aspects, including benefits to science and technology and space exploration for the country.
"The details of the agreement will be based on our evaluation of the first mission and the scientists' assessment of the benefits of the experiments."

Najib said a cost-benefit analysis would be conducted.

"Since the next expedition would involve public funds, the government would have to convince the public of the need of the mission, although I can say now that we are very interested in continuing our space programme.

"The return of our astronaut marks our success in space. We want the country to benefit in the years to come from our angkasawan programme."

Najib, who is also defence minister, said he was grateful to ministries and agencies involved in the programme.
